looking into my first handgun,

As above, check a bunch out to see how they feel in your hand. Personally, I don't like how a Glock feels. I love the Steyr, but would suggest a M&P instead, the funky sights on the Steyr take a bit of getting used to. The M&P feels very similar to the Steyr in your hand.

Then there are a lot of steel guns out there also. An inexpensive choice would be the one of the CZ/Baby Eagle family.

Don't worry too much about getting the "right" gun, just consider it as your FIRST gun.

Or a firearm that you can train reliably with? How about something combat tested? Or "as reliable as possible" if you wanted to use it for protecting your home?

Look at the advice of people telling you to get something that "feels nice" or people that bought the gun for looks and compare that advice with instructors you can find writing on the internet, people in combat, and veteran Special Forces guys.

There is one answer to what to buy/carry in 9mm that is incredibly common amongst the list of people above that i would respect.

Glock

A G17/19 in 9mm
Not this crap again . Veteran Special Forces guys? How many do you personally know? And which special forces use Glocks anyway? Navy Seals use the P226 and Mark 23, Delta and Rangers use 1911s, British SAS uses the P226, as does JTF2.

Who uses Glock? The Austrians, who haven't been at war with anybody since 1918? The Fiji Islands tactical response unit? Mall security in Las Vegas?

You need to lay off the kool-aid, buddy.

But,but, but, but, but doesn't/didn't Kevin B use a Glock? (But I don't think he used a drop leg holster)

re

Glock is a great choice in handguns. I have a G17C, G22 and a G21SF with picatinny rail. Get a Glock 17 if you want 9mm. If you want to get a larger cal then might as well go .45 as .40 is almost same cost to shoot and both hold 10 rnds anyway.

Did I say I know them? No... Does that matter?

How many do I know personally? Hmm... There is a term Quiet Professional for a reason I think... If I did, would I say. You might have heard of OPSEC.

Anyway, who cares, after all when I am an anonymous guy on the internet, why listen to me when you can use the internet for verification for what teams and individuals who could choose their own weapon carry.

In any case, since I don't need to throw out "JTF uses" and "SEALS use", I can just use google to show you that the many of the same people WHO TRAIN THE UNITS you mention do not train with or personally carry the ISSUE weapon of the UNIT.

What they are ISSUED and what they CARRY are two different things.

Besides: It also depends on the mission they are on. Different missions call for different weapons. Most times the weapons are not U.S. Government issue, but military arms from "other" countries, for example, when an ODA is training an indigenous group.

Hmm. Here is a start:

Paul Howe? Delta

Greg Hamilton? Ranger/SF/Airborne, Owner Insights Training Center, 2 time National Tactical invitational winner, Former Gunsite staff, etc.

John Holschen? SF, Former Director of Commercial Training for Triple Canopy, Instructor - JFKSWC.

Gabriel Suarez? SEAL

Larry Vickers? SF

Mike Shertz? SF/SWAT

Jim Cirillo? NYPD, Legend

Clint Cmith, Marine, Renown Instructor and Thunder Ranch Owner...

How is that for a start. SF Backgrounds, some national champion shooters, instructors at major schools, and trainers for elite units with no sponsorship or teaching contract with other manufactures that might "affect" what they carry.

Ohhh... I said elite... must be drinking cool-aid. Said "SF" too.

EG: Howe, Delta, teaches w/ glock. Simple.

Recent Paul Howe instructor course:

htt p://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=347106

"All instructor-candidates and Paul were running Glocks."

Where is the fancy 1911? They leave that on the set of The Unit I guess.

You think if JTF could choose what they wanted to shoot in 'STAN as a sidearm, they would choose the SIG? CF only has the Browning and the SIG in the inventory if I am not mistaken. Any CF members want to verify if anyone is allowed to "pick" what they want to carry?

How about Triple Canopy and other PMC's: TC never lost as a man in Iraq I heard, and had the best trainers in the business, and mostly SF vets on PSD teams etc. What did they issue to their contractors?

More evidence:

Gabe Suarez:

"What do I carry? I carry a Glock 17 with 17 rounds of Corbon DPX ammo in 9mm.

Even the CGN favorite Yeagar of Tactical Response is a Glock evangelist...

How about Clint Smith from the real "TR" THUNDER RANCH... Probably the most in demand instructor for military and LE in the country

"Ask Clint Smith at Thunder Ranch what Glocks have problems on the firing line:

His answer will be something along the line of, "One's that have been "modified' and have had parts changed from original."

I don't speak for Clint Smith, but he did say this at least once."

Clint teaches with a highly engraved 1911 often. When asked why he said "If I can only carry one, it should be a a nice one..." And he has a "Thunder Ranch" marketing deal for 1911's so of course that is what he will promote.

But take a look at what he used when he was being filmed for his DVD series of training videos... Glock 9mm...

Here is a quote from Larry Vickers:

"1) IMO the Glock 19 and 17 are the best Glock's made - both are excellent pistols - I own, use, and recommend both....

Bottom line Glocks in 9mm are excellent pistols - they are not my first choice in other calibers however - the S&W M&P has been called a product improved Glock ; this may be true but the verdict is still out as the M&P is a relatively new handgun vs millions of Glock's in service (mostly in 9mm I might add) and S&W has a spotty record in terms of autoloading pistols - time will tell

hope this helps

Larry Vickers"

Oh yeah: National Tactical Invitational: Collection of the best instructors in the country, all with significant LE/Mil backgrounds and training:

Make of primary firearm used during NTI XV.
Glock-57%
SIG-14%
Colt-11%
Caspian-6%
Kimber-6%
Ed Brown-6%
Others used-Springfield, STI & S&W.

HOw about the NYPD? I am sure they have had a few gunfights, though not special forces. Speaking of NYPD. You know Jim Cirrilo?

"Toward the end of his life, he was generally to be found carrying one or another small Glock, either the G27 in .40 S&W or the G30 in .45 ACP "

Any more questions or do you want to waste time and compare training and instructors we know in order to validate some facts or to get some SF guys or SEALS to tell you they can carry what they want for a mission...?

There are 4 million glocks in military and LE service for a reason.

I love my G17, hold each gun and it possible shoot it before you make a final decision.

Sure, it might fit your hand better or feel nice.

So why not save some time and use the millions of data points of other professionals who have put way more lead down range then you have.

Then if you find their info wrong or know/learn something better than what they suggest you are in pretty good stead having added to their research.

Instead, you might end up buying what you think is cool, or fits, and then if you get serious you will end up changing to what works.

If it is just for fun or sitting in your safe... Sure, buy something cool looking.

And to the OP:

If you are just learning I'd rather have money for ammo and training with a gun "that works" rather than a pretty gun that sits in a safe...

Get good then decide!

I suppose you want an auto. In that case the CZ 75 is hard to beat.

OTOH, the Blackhawk Convertible in my sig. line comes with two cylinders- .357 Magnum/.38 Special and 9mm.

Three cartridges fired from one gun. Pretty cool and pretty cheap to shoot.

Get a nice CZ 75B 9mm like this one... like mine :D

Glock 21SF

Buy a .45. This is a Glock 21SF with Picatinny Rail and Ambi Mag. Release. Cheap. And man, it goes pow! pow! pow! and is a blast to shoot. You'll have a lot more fun with it than a 9mm.
