Looking to buy a 1911......Suggestions

If you need a project gun, ie you can put a lot of things on it yourself and do a lot of things to it yourself without having to worry about ruining an expensive gun, get a Norinco. Good lesson gun, fool around with it, file it, strip it, do whatever the hack you can think of to it, and you will get a good knowledge of how the 1911 works and how to do some basic 1911-smithing. If you just wanna shoot, and have enough money that you wanna get the gun and start shooting right away without having to take it to a gunsmith to get it all tricked out, then get a STI.

If you are on a budget can't play more than $1500 for a gun, then get a para.

Marstar.ca have BULs which are 1911s with polymer frames which is supposed to be very good. All the BULs have bull barrels:D .

And most importantly find one that fits your hand, ie double stack vs. single stack. Norinco, STI, Para, are widely available, BUL is only distributed by Marstar

For the Norinco's, check out Marstar.ca. For the others (Para, Smith, Kimber, Colt) check out Ontario retailers such as Williams Arms, Ellwood Epps, Ronin Sports (roninsports.com), Shooters Choice.

For STI's check out Freedom Ventures (see advert at top of page), and for SVI's check out Double Tap Sports or Dark Int'l (Roger K., Roger also carries Norinco's).

Also, there is a very active used market. Check out the Equipment Exchange forums for some excellent deals.

I recently got my first 1911. It's a Para SSP from Armco. Great pistol and Gunnar is great to deal with and his price on the Para SSP is amongst, if not the best out there. I'll hotlink his page here as he is a CGN sponsor, look at his bulletin board.

Get a Norc. You can't go wrong on the price. If you buy it though, don't give yourself any illusions that you'll form a crowd of admirers on any given range.

Its certainly not a rock stars gun. Mine works like a charm. You'll problably want to change out your grips and you may end up hot rodding it.

I have to recommend the Para SSP. I looked around at alot of 1911's before buying the Para SSP and I have not been disapponted in the least. It is probably one of the, if not the best 1911 for the money.
