the local gun shop has some Mosins in stock, both hex and round,(finally), and i need to know what`s desirable and what to avoid. I`m a Lee Enfield guy, and not picky when it comes to buying them. I`m thinking that the Mosin could be a different animal altogether, and am a little unsure of the idiosyncrasies and common problems that i`m sure a rifle produced in such huge quantities must have. any thoughts from the Mosin guys?

A lot of people prefer the Hex actions. Wartime dates sometimes are a bit rough on the finish. Other than that, it is sort of a coin toss, but, the Finns did prefer Hex actions for their target and Sniper rifle conversions.

Go to WIKI and read what they have to say about the Mosin rifle and its variants. Once there I would pay special attention to the Dragoon variant. These rifles are fairly common and are being sold and priced as the more common 1891/30 Mosin-Nagant which they are not (WIKI will explain this). As far as the bore goes stay away from counter bored and the obvious but looking down the bore on a gun that was packed in cosmoline 60 years ago and hasn't seen a proper cleaning in just as long may be totally pointless. Some dealers do clean and do offer proper assessment but probably not your local shop. As an example I have just today finished cleaning a 1940 dated Mosin-Nagant. It was a solid 8 day process where on the first day I soaked the bore with Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar 3 times for 15 minutes each. I then patched and cleaned it. After that I soaked the bore with a copper/lead solvent for 24 hours after which I again patched and cleaned again. The copper/lead solvent soak/cleaning process was repeated every 24 hours for 8 days....it just now came out clean and the rifling looks very nice with acceptable signs of wear.
