A M38 Swede was my first milsurp rifle (1980). I still have it and shoot it regularly. Paid 80 bucks. You can still pick up nice ones in the 350-400 range. Excellent value in my mind. My most accurate military rifle with handloaded jacketed bullets.
Sounds like me. Mine was so rough and mismatched I figured it had no real collector value, so I bubbaed it. Steamed out dents, did some scraping and sanding on the stock, and had the metal reblued, no polishing, I just cleaned off the bit of rust present. Refinished the birch stock and it's a nice looking rifle, again no collector value. I have several more, that have only been cleaned up, basically rubbed stock down with 4/0 steel wool with linseed oil and beeswax, and cleaned old dried lube and crud off the metal and relubed. My pride is a 2 digit serial number model 38 conversion, by Mauser Obendorf, with a 1900 mfr date, everything matching. Picked it up a a local gun show about 10 years ago, the show was winding down and the dealer did not want to carry it home so got it for about $125. My other love is the Swiss straight pull rifles, K 38 and M 1911. I was too late to the dance to get into our Springfields at a decent price, back when I was in college nice one's could be had for 40-50 dollars, but money was hard to come by then. I would not mind one of the Enfields but do not know much about them. I also have one of the Yugo Mausers, which is a nice rifle.
