Im looking to buy my first pistol and looking for suggestions on what type and where to buy.

Thanks

o crap....you need to help us a bit more than that.....have you ever been shooting before...what did you use? what felt good in your hand? what is your budget? reloading? experience? are you planning of modding it? long term short term ideas?

of course people will give you the good advice of buying what fits your hand well.....well enough to feel as if it is an extension of your arm...

also, you will get the good advice of starting with a .22 ....ruger mark 3 for example. cheap ammo and you can greatly improve your technique

what caliber? 9mm-40SW-45ACP
for what purpose? (plinking paper targets or sport shooting)
light frame or heavy frame? (polymer/alloy or steel)
DAO (double action only)
DA/SA (double action/single action)
or SAO (single action only)

1- you have first ask yourself what you need a pistol for and then ask us what you have to buy !
2- better visit your local range, borrow some different models and calibers and see which fit your hands at the best ......and of course which one is your "love at first sight" pistol
wish you good luck with your first purchase and a very welcome to the pistol club !

Looking for something in a 9mm just to start learning how to shoot. Should I go used to start and if so where would I start looking for purchase one. Dealer? Private?

have you ever handled (even without firing) a gun? how big or small are your hands, and your fingers?

for some people, a Glock evidently feels like holding a 2x4 whereas for me it's great cuz i have giant paws. for me, a 1911-style is too skinny and my hand cramps around the narrow grip, but a beretta-style is easier. another guy i run into at the range has short fingers and has to really angle his hand to reach the trigger on a Glock, and he tends to shoot a CZ whenever i pay attention.

even on a 22LR (way cheaper than 9mm), some pistols fit fairly well and are cheap enough (Ruger, Buckmark), others fit well but have odd controls (High Standard), and others are wonderful but pricey (Smith model 41).

can you borrow pistols once you're at the range to figure out what kinda fit is good for you for 50+ rounds?

I'd suggest taking a look at CZ 85 Combat. Very versatile pistol. You can later shoot IDPA or IPSC with it, and as some fast shooters do - pre-compensate the sights to your liking ;)
It's all metal, ambi, and has very good ergonomics.

The guy who mentioned going to the range and talk to other guys and check out their guns , see what their shooting , what you have in common is great advice .

I just went to my first range day and watched the IDPA guys practicing , and considering im interested in that sort of shooting what a good place it was to start .

I got to hold and check out an sks , some berettas a glock compact some ARs. And considering Ive been looking at both glocks and berettas it was quite unique to actually be able to hold it in your hand and see how it feels . It comes to you the moment you pick it up wether or not you think you could be comfortable using it .

Get a smith MP 9mm is cheap. Get it used lots off guys are selling them.

The back strap can change to fit you hand. Once your get comfortable shooting. Then trade up.

Cheers
