Looking to buy my first rifle

I recommend a repeating 30.06 bolt action rifle

Current .30-06 factory ammunition varies in bullet weight from 7.1 g to 14.3 g (110 to 220 grains) in solid bullets, and as low as 3.6 g (55 grains) with the use of a sub-caliber bullet in a sabot. Loads are available with reduced velocity and pressure as well as increased velocity and pressure for stronger firearms. The .30-06 remains one of the most popular sporting cartridges in the world and will effectively take down any big game in North America and is widely available everywhere.

Though not one of the most attractive rifles ever designed, the Savage 110 has a well-deserved reputation for strength and accuracy. One of the reasons for its fine accuracy is the reason many call it ugly: the barrel locknut. Features include adjustable trigger, detachable or non-detachable box magazine (varies by model), and a three-position thumb safety. Accutrigger available on newer models. Affordable and somewhat utilitarian but man, do they ever shoot! They are tough, well-designed, and accurate right out of the box. They are built to perform in the field rather than to decorate your gun cabinet.

Since it is your first rifle, I would recommend something affordable like a Savage...

Later on when, if you still like shooting you can get something nice like a Husqvarna or a Sako and you'll appreciate the difference.

Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 is what I would get.

+2

I upgraded from a stevens 200 in 308 to a Weatherby Vanguard sporter (not series 2) in 308 that I bought at wholesale. Rifle and the scope I bought came to just over $600. If you can find one, most places are getting rid of their "series 1" for $450ish to make room for the new rifles.

If I can't find a TC Dimension before fall I'll be buying a Vanguard Series 2 in 25-06 or 7mm-08 as a back up for deer season.

Cheers,

Karl

I hear the 270 is one of the flatest shooting calibers never used em but they have been in the family.Sounds like a good place to start.

I am looking at buying a new hunting rifle. I want a versatile gun for deer/moose. But I don't want to spend a fortune. Any sugestions. I was thinking about at .270

The 270 Winchester is a great all-round cartridge. However be aware that you seldom get published velocities from factory loaded ammo, more so than with other cartridges anyway.

I suggest you go to the stores and handle all models in your price range and buy the one that fits you the best. There's nothing worse that buying a gun that doesn't fit, feel comfortable or come to the shoulder naturally.

I have a Marlin 30-30 which is in extremely nice condition. Its a model 30AS and has a 4X32 tasco on top in mint shape that I do not need. The stock is really nice on this rifle as well as the blueing also. The lever action is really slick and works extremely well for the age also. I believe its a copy of the 1895 Winchester version. It has only been fired about 25 times since new. For $500. it could live at your house real quick. :)
