I'm looking for my first shotgun. 12ga

Versatility, Upgrades/ modification and reliability are what I'm looking for.

Something to be rough with, im not afraid to scuff it up.

Say $400-$600 range.

What would you CGN shotgun vets recommend?

Kinda steering toward the REM 870 or Moss 590.

I personally prefer the 590 over the 870 but either would suit you just fine. I would say the 870 wins on versatility just because barrels are much much easier to find.

You might consider the Weatherby pump - its in the same league, and seems to be more gun for the dollar. I had an 870 Express for years, it would stove pipe every once and a while - not good. Some folk experienced "sticky" chambers on their 870's - not good either.

What will the shotgun be used for? What kind of modifications are you referring to? If you want a short barreled craptical gun, you would find more information in the black and green shotgun forum.

This has been answered over and over.
Shotgun shooting is all about gun fit. Try before you buy, if you want to shoot it well. Hang around your local range and try out other shooters guns for fit, comfort.
There are a few pump shotguns of modest price and pretty good quality on the market. Avoid the "who ever heard of them?" brands.

Just because you stated this "Versatility, Upgrades/ modification and reliability are what I'm looking for" youd be better off with the 870 there are tons of things to be done with it, but anything listed will be fine as well as long as it fits you right

Mossberg 500 , variety of barrels available 18.5,20,rifled for slugs with scope mount ,28 chokes , mag extensions, tactical upgrades galore if that is your thing
tons of stocks available and mods , accessories too numerous to bother counting
the humpty dumpty of the shotgun world

I already asked the intended use of the gun, but still no answer. Somehow I get the idea that he wants to built a toy that will be totally impractical for actual hunting.
