Hey y'all.
I've been thinking about getting into the action shooting game for a while and I think it's time....
What I need to know is if an IPSC black badge is the best way to go?
Looking to start with a bare bones 9mm semi.
I'm also looking for a group with a good atmosphere where my kids could come and watch (as they have expresses interest as well).
Looking to do a couple matches in southern Ontario per year.
May also consider trying 3 gun if I find an AR in my budget.
Please let me know what you all think and where you have had the best experiences.

Have you thought about Cowboy Action Shooting??
It's a crazy amount of fun. I started last yr after being out of the shooting sports for more than 20 years and it's now pretty much taken over my life!! I've gone to matches in 6 or 7 locations around Ontario and always found people to be friendly, encouraging and helpful! It's definitely worth a look!
 
IPSC Black Badge is likely the most accessible way to get into action shooting and will open the doors to IPSC rifle and shotgun competition. Go to the IPSC Ontario website and find a black badge course. Many of them run Spring and Fall.

My son is scheduled for his Black Badge course this March break.
 
IPSC was my entry point as well. Now shoot whenever I can IPSC, CQB, Multi gun, or Shotgun. As with any thing take it to the level you want from just for fun to trying to become the next champ. Actually may try the coyboy thing this year as well as a way to get the 357 and lever gun out of the safe for some fun!!
 
I would definitely look at the black badge for what you are planning on getting into. It will allow you to shoot IPSC and pretty much every outlaw multigun match in Southwestern Ontario.

As for firearms, run what you have for sure for the first few matches and see how it works, as well as having an opportunity to look at some other guns that people use to see if you want to upgrade. You'll need a solid belt, holster and 4 (minimum) magazines and mag pouches for the BB course, but I'd recommend at least 6 mags for competition (and 4 pouches with a magnet as a 5th) to allow for f*@k ups and reloads at unplanned moments.

If you are thinking about multigun stuff, or non-pistol matches, then check out the ontario action shooting league (there's a thread here on CGN with links) for several shotgun only matches from may to september and there are already 2 multigun matches planned at Crumlin in London. Equipment wise you'll need a rig to hold a minimum of 30 shotgun shells (more if you can) for the shotgun only matches since the stages can run 28 rounds. for multigun matches where you're shooting more than one firearm per stage you will usually need more in the neighborhood of 15-20 rounds max per firearm per stage (often lower for rifle and shotgun).

If you are looking at getting an AR there are lots of site sponsors that carry affordable options (IRunGuns in particular have several very inexpensive ones right now on sale that are in Canada ready to ship).

All of the clubs running action shooting matches in SW Ontario are very open to spectators coming out for the matches, so if you'd like to come out and observe first just check out the various websites for the locations and dates and bring the family for sure!

Dito to all above. IPSC black badge allows you to shoot pretty much any of the others. Kids are always welcome if you can keep them safe and they help patch!
 
Best to tell people where you live and then they can let you know what is available. Idpa or Icore might be awesome but I would have drive about 14 hours to get to a club shoot. IPsc is 20 minute away so it is more accessible.
 
Not into action shooting but I've also heard about ODPL for a less expensive option.
From what I've heard IPSC = $$$$$$.

As with anything in life, it can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be.
Shooting sports in general are not cheap, but no one is forcing anyone to buy $10,000 custom race guns.

If you stick with local(ish) matches and find used or cheaper equipment and buy a m&p range kit you can get started for cheap. However if you go buy a Tanfo and ghost holster and mag pouches and a back up gun and travel across the country to shoot then yeah it adds up,you can make it or mucho $ if you want to.

Golf, hockey, can be more expensive than IPSC. The biggest expense is the initial equipment purchase, but as with everything, we always want more and better, and that is what costs!
