Looking to get into "big" game hunting - need advice

Read the regs....hunting in ON just lists centerfire rifle now. No calibers. - meaning any centerfire cartridge is legal....IF there is a rifle season in that WMU.

You either have a rifle season or don't. Most of southern ON is just ML/Shotgun/Bow

And now to talk about the topic - 308 is easy, 270 or 243 are also great choices for ON. Agree on 2-XX scopes. Leupold makes great 2-7x33. Burris has a 2-8x35.

Another great calibre for do it all stuff is 7mm-08; can basically take anything huntable in Canada with that one Cal.
Hey buddy since you think you know everything… ever hear of something called BY-LAWS?? I can’t be bothered by researching and posting screenshots but Essex county has a caliber restriction by law and I know other municipalities do as well. Just because the hunting regs say it’s okay doesn’t mean it is!!!! Cheers know it all.

Dear lord

I get it dude, I just know the last time I lived in Ontario the regs actually listed 243 and above etc.

Literally meant nothing by it and you read a hell of a lot into the post.

I see no rifle season in 94A or 94B....no ML season...just bows only in 94B.

So it wouldn't matter what the bylaw says for discharge as there's no rifle season for deer anyways.

Correct me if I'm wrong here....

Dear lord? I just made sure to inform the guy to check his local regulations to verify he isn’t limited on firearm choices in his areas. Somebody may want to know that just starting out and purchasing their first rifle. Thought maybe the guy would want to LEGALLY hunt his area with the firearm he purchased TO hunt with. Then you come on here quoting my post, telling me to read the regs, and telling the OP I’m wrong and to not worry about the caliber he chooses. Read a hell of a lot into the post? I get notifications when I have a genius quoting my posts ? Now let’s not hikack this thread Mr know it all. Back to the topic.

Last couple deer hunts I used my sig cross first lite in 6.5 with a Nightforce shv 4-14 non illuminated with capped turrets on top. Really like that setup. Simple hash mark reticle, figure it to your load instead of a bdc. Nice reticle for hunting and target shooting in my opinion.

Yer' already most of the way there. 308 is good, Browning, Tikka, Winchester are all good starter options, hell Savage is also pretty good. Spend yer' dough on good optics, 3x9x40 will likely do most of everything you need. Vortex, Leupold, and Bushnell will more then suffice in that category. Also spend decent money on boots, never mind the Walmart "hunting boots" check out Cabeleas, Marks etc for good hiking/hunting footwear. A decent pack will be helpful as well, again..no Walmart crap, Cabelas has a good selection. Hope this helps........
