I am looking at getting into IPSC & IDPA style shooting. I currently enjoy shooting clays and wanted to try something different. I owned a S&W 586 abouy 25 years ago but was deployed so often I never had a chance to pursue the sport. So treat me as a total newbie. What would be the best gun and caliber to start and thoughts on the price of ammo. I also saw people talking about conversion kits to keep the cost of ammo down. I served in the military so I am familar with Browning model 1911 and partial to the semi's over the revolvers. They have a great club where I live the NCRRA. Cheers.

Go for IPSC production/ IDPA SSP division equipment. Get a 9mm double action or striker fired gun, 4 mags and a good belt, holster and mag pouches. Gear from Blade-Tech or Comp-Tac can be used in either sport.

Find a gun that you like, fits your hand and has a reliable supply of parts. There are a dozen or more makes that meet this criteria.
Here is a link to the equipment survey done at the 2010 IDPA nationals.

Not every gun on this list is suitable for Production/SSP division but the most common ones (Glock, S&W M&P) are good choices. I have shot a 9mm Sig 226 for the last 4 years and done fairly well with that in both games.

I imagine you mean the P 35 or Hi Power. I competed with a HiPower for several years. If you just want to have fun, they are fine, but the minor power factor means you have to get A zone hits as much as possible.

they work fine in IDPA ESP because you dont need major, and you can get hi powers in .40 if he wanted to shoot standard

what province are you in? best to ask those in your province about course for IPSC participation.

Have you contacted Don at NCRRA? They have an IDPA group up there and I'm sure would be willing to get you active in the sport and let you try a few different pistols to see what best works with you!

I can pm you Don's email address if you do not have it.

If you have any other questions just ask.

Geoff.

where in Ontario are you If you are in the Brantford area The Waterford Sportsman club has an IPSC pratice night every Monday night and you are welcome to attend and see what IPSC is all about

I don't know if you are close enough, but you can go to Target Sports Canada in Gormley (404 and Stouffville) and shoot a bunch of guns to see what you like. Everybody can recommend what they like personally, but you'll find what you feel comfortable with. If you're looking for an auto, then Glocks, 1911's, Sig P226 & P229, 92FS, and CZ's seem to be common. Personally I really like my HK USP but I can't shoot it worth an S, so I use my CZ. At the end of the day it's about having fun, so don't get too stressed about the gear.

I am in Ontario

If you register on the IDPA Canada website there is an article that addresses this issue in detail. You might want to have a read. You will find it on the Forum under "Equipment Questions".

It is all about having fun no matter which sport you choose.

Take Care

Bob
