Hey Guys and Gals

I'm a new hunter-to-be looking to get out for spring turkey this year. I'm located in Milton and have been looking to get out somewhere in Southern Ontario, but really don't have anyone that can show me the ropes and mentor me. I'm down to pitch on tags equipment, case of beer whatever! I have an OU and understand i can use that for Turkey.

shoot me a private msg or post on here if you have any tips on places i can go around here. I've down my due diligence and it looks like WMU 79c would be a great option and i've been going out and exploring trails etc...

thanks in advance

You may use any 12 or 20ga shotgun for Turkey. The advantage with a double gun is that you could configure the barrels (chokes) to tackle different distances.

Prior to opener, need to ensure the shotgun already has or could be equipped with the appropriate choke(s). Also need to determine which ammo will pattern the best at distance(s) you may be prepared to shoot the bird.

Variety of ammo available in the market. I've found that Kent Turkey loads #5 and #6 generally pattern very well out to 35 yards - the ammo is also reasonably priced. Winchester Longbeard ammo is excellent but expensive.

FYI, it would be to your benefit to read up on Tick prevention and prepare accordingly.

Good luck!

Keep exploring, keep knocking and if that fails, hire an outfitter... there are a few good ones West of you.

Figure out where you can gun hunt just north of Milton. I'm not sure on discharge bylaws in the area but there are TONS of turkeys around there. Milton to Kitcherner/waterloo/guelph/Hillsburg area that I drive through has a lot of open farm land. You just need to knock on doors and get permission. DO IT NOW before every Tom, #### and Harry is out asking. The 2 weeks prior to the hunt is the most common time for people to ask for permission, Land owners get sick of talking to random people about permission and after a while just say NO. Go now and lock down spots before the masses.

You really dont need a "mentor" to show you the ropes. Now a days you can research online, Literally watch hundreds of self filmed turkey hunts from Ontario on youtube. No one is an expert and they could very well pass more bad hunting habits to you than anything good.

Sooo much more satisfying when you do it on your own and make it work. Killing turkeys isnt hard really , Just finding a good spot that holds birds and being patient is the biggest thing because these damn birds do whatever the hell they feel like, No call or decoy is a sure thing, Some days the come running, Other times they ignore you.

Edit: maybe wait a few weeks before going knocking on doors with the way things are right now Lol kinda forgot about that.

As mentioned You Tube has a ton of good video's on calling/ techniques/ decoys etc.

I didn't have the ability to go on the "World Wide Web" back in the day when I started but did read some articles. I went out with a buddy who was as useless as me at the sport. If we could screw it up we did, for at least the first couple years.
I shot my 1st turkey by myself after calling it somewhat close enough :sok2
I'll never, ever forget it.
Find a spot, lots north of you and get at it !!!!
