Hey all,

Located in Calgary Alberta, looking to try out IDPA. I will be signing up for my black badge shortly, and wanted to get a line on as much information as I can before I do it. I rubbed the belly of the google for "IDPA Alberta" but didn't come up with much.

If someone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

Thanks
ASD

Try "myathl" this is the home page for IDPA in Calgary area. "Alberta Tactical Handgun League". Next match is at the Drumheller gun club on April 27th. You don't need a Black Badge course to shoot IDPA, but it is a good training course to get started in IPSC and IDPA. You can shoot your first match for the non member fee, then next match you have to join ATHL to shoot a sanctioned match, or if you're a member of BTSA, which is the other range we shoot at, you can shoot non sanctioned matches without joining ATHL. Not sure of Drumheller gun club rules? Read the rule book on the IDPA home page, watch some videos and come on out and give it a try!
You can PM me if you like for any further info, I'm the Vice-President of ATHL.

And once you're up and running, you'd be welcome to shoot with IDPANL if you ever get down to Newfoundland. :)

Signed up and my blackbadge course is the 12th in spruce grove,
Damn excited!
I want to do IDPA and figured best get the course in now, so if anything I am safer and better prepared to get started.
I have a feeling we are both getting into it at the right time of the year lol
I bought my holster and mag holder set thru Zahal, they are a site sponsor, but I bought it off their ebay store because it had free shipping and was a tad bit cheaper that way lol

I shoot both, IDPA and IPSC. I did the BB for the same reason. I don't think you will find anyone to discourage you from doing the BB. Whatever you want to do after that, you'll have a good foundation.
I do recommend that you get some range time in ahead of the course and get some practice. There are things in the BB that you don't do very often, strong hand and weak hand are a couple of things that come to mind.

I've been going to the range every week doing "reps" of strong hand, weak hand, and moving the target distance each week, as well as using the ranges set up so the target turns sideways, the faces you for any amount of seconds you program, then turns away again. Usually I try for 5 shots in 5 seconds, and only move the target back once I can do 5 shots in 5 seconds and cover the group with my hand. Started at 3y, then 5, 7,10 and at 15 right now.
When I'm not doing that I am trying for slow, accurate shots at 20,25,30 yards.
I've been logging my trips and hoping its helped me prepare, aswell as tons of the penny practice dry fire at home, but any suggestions are always welcome!!

I found the BB as more of a confirmation that you could shoot as opposed to spending a lot of time teaching you the finer points. Sounds like you will be more than prepared to complete the course.
