An Elk hunt has always been on my list of things to do. so before the wife and I start a family now is my chance to get out on an elk hunt! Hahah

Being from Ontario the elk hunt we have is like winning the lottery. So I wouldn't mind heading to another Province.

Can anyone lead me in the right direction to where I should look at going with a good Elk population? Either with a guide or just a local hunter.

Well, it depends if you know a person in Alberta or not. If you do, and they can hunter host you, there are some parts of Alberta with general season Elk tags. A lot of the WMUs require a draw which you pay the full tag amount to enter and there is a very good chance you won't get selected, but that is an option too. You still need a hunter host for draws but as I said before, most areas require a drawn tag.

You can check out the seasons as well as get maps of the Alberta WMU at the Alberta regulations website. The direct link is here.

The other option is to go through a guiding service.

I am lucky enough that I have blood relatives out west so this fall I am planning a similar trip for either white tail or Mule deer.

For Alberta residents a person has to pay a few dollars for each draw that they apply for and only if they are drawn and actually purchase the licence do they have to pay full price, I thought it’s the same for hunter host licences too?

I went to BC in 2012, and hunted with Ram Creek Outfitters. Steven & Stefanie Leuenberger run a first class camp. I will say one thing. If you are going on an alpine Elk hunt in BC, make sure you are in shape.

Oh yeah... I shot a real nice bull.

I don't know if your looking for any bull elk however I would suggest to Google APOS, Alberta Provincial Outfitter Society and check out and research the outfitters who offer such services.

When I called the head office of the Alberta MNR equivalent the lady explained that as a non-resident you have to pay the full tag price. Obviously, I may be mistaken but that's what I was lead to believe. I imagine that the host would follow the typical scheme where they don't pay the full tag price if they are unsuccessful in the draw.

Not really. Indians from all over hell come here to kill elk, one way or another.
And don't forget it's also a Meca for guys that like shooting elk estate style.

Yes, but I guess Indians who don't live here aren't classed as non-resident hunters because they aren't regulated exactly as non-Indians.

And I guess it's presumption on my part that he doesn't want to buy a semi-domesticated elk to shoot. Are there any "canned" elk in Saskatchewan where the can is big enough to be a proper hunt?

Bc is a good hunt but tuff if your a moose hunter .
Lots to learn elk are like moose with sat phones .
days are long we start at 5 am and finish at 9:30
It will take you 4 days to locate a herd then you will need 4+ days to hunt the herd I would suggest 10 days
do your reading and plan around the moons and the rut .
north in summer south in winter .
The lead and tail cows will be watching you they will protect there bull at all cost .
Its a foot hunt assume 15 km by foot a day .
Temperatures can be very hot early season
protect yourself from grizzels we practice all year at 300+ yards 5-600 is a common shoot
Food is mushrooms in oct and willows in sept
Cheers and good luck

oh oh yea the most important part
once you shoot don't stop till it drops
shoot the front shoulder ,not the lung
a lung shot elk call go a mile straight down into the nastiest hole .
stop them in there tracks !

While I agree with Tikkam65 on most parts of his post, I disagree that a properly lung shot Elk will go far.
I have shot 35 of these big cervids, and the majority have been shot through the lungs.
Farthest any one went was about 80 yards after the shot.
It is still a good idea to shoot till they drop, just in case the first shot was not what you thought it was.
A wounded elk can travel!!

Regards, Dave.

I wouldn't overlook the western States either. Lots of good and very affordable options down there. You can go guided or un-guided. Some regions require you to draw a tag but in others you can buy over the counter or buy a landowner tag.

Do you have any direct examples of states that work this way?

I'd recommend searching the outfits in the BC Kootenays. Elk are their bread and butter so they will be very successful.
