Good evening ladies & gents,

I am looking to join a hunt camp somewhere in Ontario. I was wondering if anybody had any advice on how to find hunt camps that are accepting new members.

I am a 26yo male, married with three beautiful girls. I don't drink or smoke, very much a team player & a hard worker.

I don't think you get how these things work.

Might as well head out to the woods and hope to stumble upon a camp that's "accepting new members"

It’s an old boys club. Random askers are not approved. Family and work connections are the way. My guess is many members will be passing in the next couple years. Time will improve your chances. Be patient.

Thanks for the tips I was generally curious and couldn't find any solid leads off google.

Sometimes you will see adverts in Ontario Out of doors magazine...sometimes you will see adverts on kijiji....sometimes on here in this very forum.

Keep your eyes open, ask around.

You will find one somewhere.

Most camps I know are full of old guys and need some new guys.

Don't be swayed by the naysayers

So how does it work?

I'm curious as well.

Hunt camps are a tricky thing, as has been said, lots of old boys clubs. Does anyone hunt at your work? Any ranges or clubs in your area? Those are good places to start. You'll still likely have to prove you're a hard worker, etc, for an invite but with a foot in the door, your halfway there. Also, if you know any fisherman, there's there's good chance they are also hunters, so there may be another way in.

Posting the question here is a good way to receive tips, that is if you are able to reject such responses that do no more than to discourage people with unhelpful comments.

There are a couple of camps around that post looking for members from time-to-time, here and in Ontario Out of Doors magazine. The problem today is your timing because many members are out hunting the first two weeks of November. (Large game rifle)

I just dropped out of my camp this year, mostly for heath reasons, as I'm scheduled for some procedures this week. That was in WMU54.

So, maybe not this year, but if you post an ad for wanting to join a hunt camp next spring, that would likely yield better results.

Good luck

I was told this by headhunter a few years ago and the same applies to job hunting. If you have no obvious "way in" a camp, such as family, work, acquaintences, etc...be sure to *let people know* you are looking. Don't assume people know that you are looking to join a group.

I also sometimes see people looking for groups in various hunting related groups on Facebook.

Find an ontario based hunting related group for the animals that you want to hunt and...in december (after the game's hunting season ends), do a post. Say you are looking now to leave plenting of room in your schedule to be able to fit in next year's outings (trail maintenance, salt lick setup, etc).

Good luck!

I think the biggest issue is that you don't smoke or drink!

Juz kiddin

No kidding there. I don't smoke and sometimes feel shunned for it. Once missed out on an important work meeting as I sat alone in the conference room and everyone else decided to have the meeting in the smoke pit. No one had an issue with it until I decided to start going on fresh air breaks when they went for smoke breaks.

Depends if you're close to accessable Crown Land back roads. If so, get yourself set up with a old school bus and do some minor conversions.

Start your own group, with no smokers allowed! Nothin' worse than being confined with a whiney smoker with only wet cigarettes, on a rainy day!

Thank you for all the tips guys! It was a genuine question, and I'm not looking for and handouts. I understand you have to prove yourself, the last thing you want is a freeloader. I'll have a look at the outdoor magazines and Kijiji. I'm not looking to join right this minute, more of a long-term thing.
