Not all elk are at the top of mountains. Here's how we do it...

You know, elk used to be primarily Prairie animals at one time. :) Not sure about the rest, but all of Alberta's present elk are descended from a bunch imported from Yellowstone in the 1920s. They were extirpated here, previous to that.

Whats the Fence for in those Mountains ?
leased grazing land ?

That's the Ya Ha Tinda horse ranch. Owned and operated by Parks Canada and abuts Banff National Park, they used to raise horses there, now they just winter them. Used to be the Mecca of elk hunters, some big racks came out of there but Wolves and Grizzlies have put a severe dent in Elk populations over the years though and it can be well over a decade before you get drawn these days.

Our Saskatchewan elk ( wit the exception of the Cypress hills) are pure Manitoban strain, - bigger in body, slightly darker hair coat, with heavier & shorter antlers than Rocky Mountain elk. They have expanded their range back into their natural habitat across the aspen parkland of Saskatchewan, greatly expanding hunting opportunities here.

You need to edit your post to "looking for ex-hunters". Considering the most recent agreement between FN/Metis and the Alberta government, I have serious concerns for wildlife in the Province. Increased unregulated hunting will put a strain on populations, no doubt. Here's hoping non-aboriginals have any seasons at all in the coming years.
