Ok so like the title says up until this point I've primarily been a long gun guy. But now I'm kinda hooked on the tactical platforms. So I'm looking for something that's nonrestricted and preferably in 223. I'd also like to have a rifle that's got an supermarket following behind it. I keep hearing of an m4 clone that's .NR but can't seem to find it for the life of me. I was thinking of starting with the JR cabinet in 9mm but think I'm looking in the wrong direction and worry that I'll get bored with it.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm up for entertaining any opinions you have.

Non restricted .223: SwissArms, Tavor, Kel Tec SU-16, MR1, dressed up mini-14, AR-180B, ....
How much $$ are you willing to spend?

The Swiss Arms is definitely on the top of the list for NR semi .223 rifles, but there are other options that work well too. My 2nd choice to the Swiss Arms would be the Tavor. Jay has two that I've shot, and they are great, handy rifles. They run around $2700 as compared to the Swiss $3500. There is also the Kel Tec SU-16 or CSA VZ-58 in .223 if you're on a budget.

It's not .223, but the CZ 858 can be had with an adapter to take the XCR pistol mags. This might be an option worth considering if you don't want to spend what it costs for a Tavor or Swiss Arms rifle.

Thanks guys. I'm thinking I'd llike to have a rifle that's got all I'm looking for and if that means waiting a bit till i get enough to get it I'll do that. The last thing i want to do is buy a rifle that I'm bored with in a few months. So as far as cost goes i suppose if it's worth the money it's worth the wait.

CSA makes .223 cal VZ-58's.

These rifles have a couple downsides:

1. The AR magazine adapter isn't as durable as the B&T/Wolverine one for the 7.62 guns if you want 10 round capacity.

2. The 5.56 version is something of an unknown quantity compared to the 7.62 version.

I'm not sure I'm into the .cz stuf. Kinda reminds me of an sks and i want an .ar style like the acr or something similar. Not saying it's not a good choice but it's not exactly what I'm looking for for a tactical rifle. Plus i can't speak Russian yet lol

The two I'd consider are an ACR or Tavor - although getting an aftermarket NR barrel for the ACR will push the price up. The ACR is just a great rifle - period. The Tavor is a bullpup design, so it has great ergonomics in a compact design. While the Swiss Arms is a really nice rifle, I've never been able to get past the exorbitant price, heavy weight and 5-round limitation.

1. OP didn't stipulate taking AR mags was a requirement (unless I missed it).

2. I've owned both a CZ 858 and a CSA .223 rifle, and quality for both of them is comparable. The only issues I've seen is the gas piston breaking on the Compact CSA's (haven't seen it pop up as an issue with the Carbine or full sized rifles).

Hey J996,

I never get tired of looking at that Swiss Arms and ACOG. It is a happening piece of equipment.

Thanks, I would not trade that rifle for any other. It only takes a few seconds to attach the optic and cheekpiece for long range and it holds zero. Headshots at 500yds on silhouettes is no problem.
