Looking to purchase first 12ga shotgun

Mossberg 500 is awesome. If you want to dip your toes into a shotgun purchase first without spending a lot- start with a Mossberg Maverick. They are excellent performers and have a lot of aftermarket support.
 
Mossberg 500 is alloy receiver, lightweight. Remington 870, steel receiver, heavy. Browning BPS, steel receiver, heavy. Winchester SXP, alloy receiver, lightweight . All reliable. The cheapest might be Winchester SXP. The downside, not much accessories for Winchester SXP and Browning BPS. Beretta and Benelli also offers entry level pump and semis, but for a lot more. Depending on the purpose and budget, I suggest, like most of us here, go and try as much as you can get hold of from clubs and stores. Weight, LOP and the feel of the controls, find something that will fit your need and budget.

Eye dominance, build, sport, all matter in picking the right one at the right time... Its like a potato chip.. you can't have just one.

Holland and Holland Royal Deluxe in a matched skeet set would be a great start.
