How hard is it to swap out the stock .308 barrel on my Stevens action for something more suitable for longer distance target shooting. I'm hoping for a solid 500m to 800m rifle when it's all finished.

Should I try the barrel change myself or should I just bite the bullet and pay a shop to do the change? Any suggestions on who in Canada could do the job right?

I'm not averse to doing the work myself but spending some cash might be worth it rather than spending the time and buying new tools.

If you are going to be swapping barrels more than once I'd think that it would be worth it to gear-up to do it yourself. That said, I'm not sure how much a smith would charge.

The most expensive items are the barrel vise and the no-go gauge. The vise might be a worthwhile investment if you like wrenching for yourself.

I'm not planning on switching back and forth between barrels. I just want a precision .308 barrel rather than the standard sporting/hunting tube on it now.

How long is your barrel now? Twist rate? I would check a ballistic calculator if you have the bullet type and MV. More than likely you can already reach out to 800m, most 22" and 24" barrels can product enough MV to reach out that far. If you're looking for more precision and accuracy than spinning a new barrel on would be easy.

If you have a threaded and chambered barrel to install I would think most smiths would only charge $20 or $30 to remove the old one and install your new one.

Swap out the recoil lug while your at it. Can't remember your name or if you shoot with DCRA but you probably know someone local that can do it for you.
Are you going with a new custom barrel or just a heavy savage factory? Many heavy factory savage barrels are very good and if your not super serious I'd consider a factory barrel.
I don't have any available right now but they are worth $200 with a low round count IMO.

Talk to Jerry at Mystic Precision. He did the barrel swap on my Stevens 200 action (actually he did the whole build for me) and I am very happy with his work, prices, and above all, the customer service.

PM me if you have any questions or if you'd like pics of my rifle etc.

I'll give Jerry a call in a couple of days. I bought the stock I have on the rifle from him. I might have even bought the bottom metal from him too but I cannot recall.
