There are a number of reliable .22 models out there - it is a great idea to handle as many as you can as they fit very differently. I found that a couple of grips were much too small for my hands and finally settled on a Beretta that fit like a dream.

i think im going to settle with the s and w model 41. it feels really nice in my hand and i don't think ill be disappointed. does anyone have this firearm and if so, do you find its picky with the type of ammo it fires? and is it Pretty reliable?

I've started with a used MCM Margolin...
They have a pretty good trigger, they are super reliable and very easy to take down/re-assemble for cleaning.
Only down side was the lack of weight in the front. I found them a little light in the time/rapid fire event.
After shooting it for a while I bought a GSP
It just depends how much $$ you are willing to part with.
The S&W M41 is a great "classic" pistol, the workmanship is great... Yes, they can be picky about ammo, and all the one I've seen like to be really clean to work best...

you didn't say WHICH type of target shooting with .22 you want to try. The pistol requirements for NRA(bullseye900), standard pistol, ISU rapid & free pistol, and silhouette, are different but you can buy a .22 handgun which will satisfy most, but not be ideal.
well glycerin, i have no idea what type, like i said im brand new to the sport, it would basically be for just starting and seeing what i like, the range ill be a member of has a Variety of ranges for all types of shooting.
Anyone have or have shot this model?

The club might have a variety of ranges for shooting, but what glycerine is getting at is the range you joined, does it have organized shooting (for example a bullseye league) that you want to try, or do you want to shoot at targets alone at the range?
When general plinking, anything that goes bang, works. If you get into something specialized like ISSF, to be competitive might require more specialized pistols. To paraphase glycerine, you can shoot a single shot all day long on your own and have fun but won't get too far in a bullseye league (where the course of fire is simply too fast for a single shot to be effective). Conversely, a bullseye gun is perfectly acceptable to plink with, but you might be spending a ton of money where a $200-$300 gun would make you just as happy.
Note when you are talking a S&W41 in one breath and a S&W22A in another, you are going from a Cadillac to a Geo. Both are perfectly acceptable and shoot well, but given only those two pistols you would likely pick the 22A for everyday eat everything plinking, and the 41 for precise target work.
Don't be shy with the range info. Chances are there is someone from the range on here, can let you know what activities are available, and might even offer to take you along to try one of the pistols you are interested in (or if you ask nicely).

at first shooting will be strictly recreational, but in time, i would like to partake in the more serious end of it if i do enjoy it as much as i already do with only shooting a little bit. i think spending the 1200$ on the model 41 would probably be a stupid decision, for the type of shooter i am right now, the 300$ model 22a will probably be more than enough to get me started and heading into the right direction.
Always start with a Basic Plinker, even used. When you have developed your skill and decided which direction (ie sport style of shooting) you want to go, then upgrade to the gun which fits your budget and gets you ready to shoot.
I started with a $150 used ruger and Loved it. Who knows, you might prefer revolver or maybe, just move up calibers to shoot IPSC or PPC etc etc.

In mho the best out there is the Browning Medalist[Belgium made]. You can find a good used one for 500$. I've owned 12 or 15 different target 22's and for the money you can't beat the Medalist.......................................wTc
Im a few steps behind this gentleman but I'll be in the same boat soon enough.
Starting monday I'm calling in and setting up some classes for my PAL and RPAL.
But the thing is, I'm pretty hellbent on starting my collection with a Beretta 87 Target...how hard will it be to get one in Ontario and how much will it run me for a used one?
And if not that, can anyone off the top of their heads suggest another handgun with 6+ inch barrel and that cool "slab" look?
(Something like a Dan Wesson PPC, but on a semi-auto lol)<probably doesn't even exist.

guys do not forget Norinco 22's, those are cheapest pistols and fun. I personally was surprised with their accuracy. The look and feel is just as ugly as Rugers, but if so many like their Rugers than whats not to like about Norcs? For the first gun they are unbeatable. Eat any ammo, accurate and with pleasant and sharp sights.
