Looks like antiques prices are only going to go up now that this is out

Disappointing but really...they don't seem to throw the book at them when they get caught with unregistered handguns. Not much difference to a pragmatic person. If they are looking for the excuse it will suffice sadly

It is a shame that the .44 S&W Russian had to be dismembered and then destroyed. Long hard road that pistol has been on.

That POS drug dealer didn't deserve to have an Antique Smith and Wesson .44!!!!! And he even saws it off!!!!!
Throw the book at him.

May have been shortened several decades ago.
The Spanish copy of S&W #3 it was common for Mexican army shorten them. And the Fargo variant of S&W came with a five inch barrel. Every single subsequent Russian contract for the #3 the buyer requested a shorter barrel version in every negotiation of purchase contract.

If the price collapse ( very possible ) their are still worth their weight in gold.

Prior to the current version of the law and regulations, you could hardly give a .32 RF revolver away. If antique status evaporates, all the ones that would qualify as prohibited will get the chop. No new pieces can be added to the 12-6 class.
Look at what the IJ, H&A .22 revolvers currently bring as 12-6s.

...Was just thinking out loud.

Prior to the current version of the law and regulations

That's the key part, the regulations for prescribing antiques was written into law in 1998, so while the RC's can stretch their interpretation (as they did with disallowing rechambering of verboten calibers a few years back), they can't arbitrarily ban antiques that are protected by the law. Let's just hope Trudeau or his lackeys don't see this video and start getting any funny ideas...

I'd be more concerned about Trudeau and his lackeys reading the glowing reports of carrying handguns and bush shooting on this forum.

Even if an antique handgun is not considered a firearm, you still have to follow the safe storage and transport regulations for that class of firearms (ie. handguns).

What!? The drug dealer with an illegal firearm that may have ties to Mexico!? Get out of here! You don't say? Nah it can't be!?

Most authorities have known of the Antiques for many, many years. I inquired with F&W (early 2000's) on how to go about getting a permit for bringing my Ruger on backcountry hunts as backup for emergency situations and extra protection, but it was suggested that that-avenue for retricteds was very difficult to see a permit get granted.. and the antiques were mentioned instead as an option in-which I should look into to save hassle & avoid disappointment. It was repeated to me in multiple conversations with different officers afterwards, long before I realized what they were actually talking about... so Antiques aren't new news to authorities at all. They were aware of them from day one when that law came into force.

I don't know whether the court case with that meth head will cause anything abrupt to happen to the laws the way they're written, but I sure hope not. Without a general-carry backcountry permit being written in and made available for average everyday users to fill in for our oldies if the pre-98 class gets altered again, well, those oldie "better" antiques are all we've got ... I'd really like to see a modern permit written in for everyday-outdoorsmen though. I say give us that (if some official is reading this) and we'll be happy to leave our antiques at home as heirlooms instead.

Never understood why a general-outdoors carry permit hasn't existed so we could bring our modern sidearms to camp anyway. In Canada of all places, with the vast unpopulated remote spans of country we have. It's ridiculous such a permit doesn't exist.

the British government made it illegal to own the following antique calibers in November because criminals were "using them to commit crimes"in the UK all it takes is one or two idiots to change the law here too.

.320 British (also known as .320 Revolver CF, short or long) .
41 Colt (short or long) .
44 Smith and Wesson Russian .
442 Revolver (also known as .44 Webley)
9.4mm Dutch Revolver
10.6mm German Ordnance Revolver
11mm French Ordnance Revolver M1873 (Army)

I think they created another license category for those willing to jump through another legal hurdle to keep these older handguns. I thought I heard a rumour of tighter storage requirements too.

Just watch the video "Even if they are not considered firearms to possess, the storage and transport requirements are the same as for the equivalent class of firearms"

.

14 (1) An individual may store, display or transport an antique firearm only if it is unloaded.

(2) An individual may transport an antique firearm in an unattended vehicle only if

(a) when the vehicle is equipped with a trunk or similar compartment that can be securely locked, the antique firearm is in that trunk or compartment and the trunk or compartment is securely locked; and

(b) when the vehicle is not equipped with a trunk or similar compartment that can be securely locked, the antique firearm is not visible from outside the vehicle and the vehicle, or the part that contains the antique firearm, is securely locked.

(3) An individual may transport an antique firearm that is a handgun only if it is in a locked container that is made of an opaque material and is of such strength, construction and nature that it cannot readily be broken open or into or accidentally opened during transportation.

I don't understand why folks create more of the law than it is. It must be unloaded and locked in a gun case for transport. No trigger lock, ATT, ATC required.

Period.

Interesting that these also align with the most desireable antiques in canada, probably because they are easiest to reload for.

I think Brutus is referring to the UK regulations. They used to have similar antique exceptions for 44 russians, 41 colts, 44 webley's, etc. until this happened

All it takes is for trudeau to do the same thing (add those calibers to the non-antique exceptions) and they all become restricteds; or worse, for short-barreled revolvers, they become prohibited and get sent ot the smelter.
