I was in the boreal forest today just eastern edge of La Corey. Just as I was entering the trail I heard distinct call of a loon.

It's been two decades since I heard any loon in the west and I am fairly certain last time it was a mountain lake in Banff or Yoho.

Anyone know if this is unique or otherwise ??
Calgary birdwatchers say the few in Alberta are recently arrived from.the Pacific regions.
Curious

Grew up just across the border in Saskatchewan. I've spent a lot of time in the Cold Lake/Bonneyville area. If you're at the lake and DON'T hear a loon it would be strange.

I was at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary in Calgary on Wednesday this week and I was taking to this photographer who had a HUGE zoom lens on her camera and asked her what she was looking for and she said that apparently a Loon has been hanging around the sanctuary and is looking for a mate. I didn't see or hear it but I think I will stop back in there the next time I'm nearby and maybe I will get lucky and see this lonely Loon..........

Dey sure like tuh fruck up a gooder day oh feesh'in.

Funny thing, though, last year awn LacLeJewn we wuzz cleen'in

Phillies lake, west of caroline..
Has some jumbo loons...
I don't like there scary eyes, had one go for my hook once..
Kewl sounding bird.. eagles there also

Now there's a mosquito heaven if there ever was one . Probably some ospreys to boot. I've seen them on Kananaskis Lakes as well, always thought of them as a northern bird, maybe their numbers and habitat have increased ?

Grizz

I guess I have not had the luck to hear one in years. On a side note we have maybe about half dozen turkey vultures between here and Franchere Bay/Bonnyville.
Recently I was told the three sub species of waxwings are often seen together in one flock.
Dark eyed juncos show up sometimes picking out seeds.
The crows have been back at least five weeks now.
Occassion pair of sandhill cranes hereabouts too.
Sometimes I think I see pairs of winter wrens in the forest. But I have not seen them close since my last trip to Alaska. So I am not really certain.

I was amazed seeing one on the community pond. I live in MacTaggart off Rabbithill Road. It is a tiny pond and obviously loads of human traffic around the pond.
