LOOOONG PAL wait time.....

Hey guys brand new member of this forum...

I tried shooting with the GF over at the shooting edge and was immediately hooked. So i took the pal/rpal course in November of 2013 and have since been waiting for my PAL.

I checked the pal status website and it says "Your application has completed initial processing. It is now in progress. Please check the status again at a later date."

I called the RCMP and they told me it is at the Alberta CFO?

So far it's been more than 6 months waiting for this thing, is this normal? I don't have any convictions or anything other than speeding tickets in the last 5 years. I'm starting to get pretty impatient!!

any advice to give on this matter?
 
Nope it’s normal here in Ontario, they take their time so you get deterred, then maybe you will decide not to be a firearms owner / user. Give them a call and ask what the holdup is. Don’t let it bother you, the longer you are in the sport the more you will see what the government does to delay things.
 
Recently took someone I know 8 months to get his PAL. Apparently it's normal these days. My renewal this year only took a month including mailing in my application, processing and mailing my new card to me.
 
Sorry to hear about your wait. It seems to be hit and miss. My brother just did his pal and it took 5 weeks from submission to card delivery. None of his references were called.
 
Interestingly It seems since the new year or so everyone is getting them pretty darn quick. Mine was 40 days total from receipt in Mirimachi. Until my RPAL was in hand.

One reference interview and it was on its way. Not even an interview for me.

Certainly doesn't seem those in before this new trend are getting the benefit of whatever decision or turn of events that is moving things along.

Also, not trying to detract from the long standing history of this being a painful process. No doubt those mentioning it was once upon a time a nightmare and seemed like the gov't was doing everything it could to hinder gun ownership suffered through those times.

But for whatever reason now, it seems the path is smoother than it was.

No help to you in this case, and no doubt there likely those in the 3 months that have had bad experiences too. But seem to be far and few between.

Hang in there and hound the heck out of them.

No judgement. But if you have a conviction prior to the 5 years, or charged with a crime wether it got thrown out of court, you mighta got flagged. My advice is to call that CFO. Your file might in the stack of folks needs to speak with further, or interview.
 
When I got my PAL in Ontario last summer, I had it in-hand in the absolute minimum time possible.

Upgraded to R-PAL a few months ago, and same story.

In both cases I got the stamped CFO paperwork back in less than two weeks, mailed it in, and then a month later my file was done.
 
Out of related curiosity. Can someone with a juvenile record be deferred or otherwise rejected trying to get their RPAL?

The search function on these forums seems to be... lacking... i've tried a search before asking here
 
My RPAL application was received by Miramichi on June. 21, 2013. My interviews went well and both of my references were contacted. Fast forward to April. 15, 2014, nearly 10 months later. I decided to call in and bug them. I have a slightly spotty history with Police, but no criminal record. I called in today and to my surprise was transferred to the Officer who was handling my file. We talked about my history for about 20 minutes, in depth, I received my lecture on life and how Firearms ownership in Canada is a privilege, not a right. I was told I now need to hold myself to a higher standard, because he was approving my application. I should have my RPAL in 2 weeks.

So in summary, be more than honest in your application. It asks if you have ever been reported to The Police, I didn't think I had... According to the Officer, even being scooped up outside a house party for drinking in public counts as being reported to the police.

Thanks for the reply, I may be in a similar situation. I got into a little trouble when i was like... 13 or 14? I cant really remember the details because I was young, and that was more than a decade ago. But perhaps there is a hold up at the CFO's office because of the fact. I will try to call in on tuesday, and congrats on your RPAL :D
 
Mine has been 42 days from the day the CFO received my application and according to the website my license has been issued and mailed. I was a little surprised that they didn't call myself or my wife or any of my references and when I talked to them Wednesday the lady said the card had already been mailed.
 
I am really surprised that they have approved some R-PALs without the extra control measure of calling you or your references for the interview (or you calling them to speed it up).

I have a long clean and stable record, and I still had to do the phone interview thing, and everyone else in my position I know has had to do the same thing to get their R-PAL, too.

Are you sure you guys aren't just talking about your normal PAL?

When I mentioned my brothers experience I was talking about a PAL. I said as much.

P.S. On a side note, 15 years ago when I applied for my RPAL none of my references were contacted but things were a little different back then, lol.
