Loose butt (nothing sick in that eh?)

Some washers under the bolt head might help as would some packing around the inleted part of the butt. Despite what they advertse, butt firming creams do nothing to actually firm up butts.

.... Some have a peculiarly shaped, flat coiled, spring washer, that goes beneath the bolt head. If you can't find one, shouldn't too much trouble to use regular flat washers. 'Maybe necessary to reduce the diameter of the hardware store washers. .... David K.

The coiled washer is only in No.4 rifles.

the wood in your butt has likely compressed and the screw is bottoming out on the forestock lock plate (in No.1MkIII rifles).

Take the forestock off first (trust me!) if you try to turn the butt boltit will split the forestock unless you remove it first.

Next try to TIGHTEN the buttstock bolt - it might tighten up without washers if the forestock plate was keeping the bolt from turning.

If not, remove the butt bolt, add washers to it and re-install.

Hope that helps!

What Claven2 said first (i.e bolt bottoming out)

or

wood bottoming out before taper takes effect:

if so

You will probabley need to do some pen knife work on this. Basically take it apart and spend a lot of time looking at what you have, put it in the socket with out the bolt. Push in hard if it has wobble to it then it is bottoming out before the taper takes effect.
You will have to remove some material from the front (around the bolt hole) and from the shoulder that is at the end of the taper. This will expose the wider portion of the taper to the socket and allow it to not wobble.

It should not be a fantastic amount of tourqe on the bolt that keeps it from wobbling it should be a good fit and a reasonable amount of bolt tourque.

I pretty much bent a number of jack handles and ruined at least one matching stock before a smarter guy showed me the proper way

This is a problem that needs to be fixed and you can do it. take your time and once you figure it out it will be a 5 min operation.
