I have a loose front sight on an early colt commander 45 cal. My question is: can I try to re stack it or should I take the opportunity to upgrade both front and rear?

What is the sight that is on the elide now, the original itty-bitty one or a larger after market sight?

Those itty-bitty ones are kinda hard to stake, and keep from deforming. The tenon is probably the narrow 0.055" one also.

If you upgrade, then either dovetail the slide or modify the slide for the wider .125" tenon. If you try to go with a larger sight and the narrow tenon you will regret it not to far down the road.

If you restake the sight, degrease it thoroughly first. Afterwards a tiny amount of green Loctite may help keep it stable.

Thanks for the advice. It makes sense to get it dovetailed front and rear as I plan to use it quite a bit. What do you think of the Trigicon or meprolight sights? I have trigicon on the front of my Spingfield loaded and it only lasts about 4-5 rounds before its covered in crap and turns black.

I have not used them personally, other than a few rounds on a borrowed gun. I'm old, I still like the smaller dots and just haven't warmed up to the larger dots. I have talked with many people who are happy with both the quality and performance of the XS sights, based on this I have no qualms about recommending them.

I'm up in the air on them as well. They seem like they would be fast for center mass hits. I'm just not sure about longer ranges. By that I mean beer cans at 25-30 yards.
