So I was putting the original magazine back in my sks tonight and noticed first that the trigger group was quite hard to get locked back in, and now the stock seems to "pivot" on the cross pin or whatever it's called. I never noticed this before. There is quite a bit of movement in the stock. I took it apart again but same result. Any ideas what's going on?

I would say that most likely the magazine isn't in correctly and that is affecting the latching of the trigger group to the receiver. Disassemble and reassemble again ensuring that the box magazine is "hinged" under that stock pin. Then install the trigger assembly...it will be/ should be tight.
