I have a question about gun fit. My sporting clay gun,is a Citori XS special high rib has a adjustable comb and Gracoil recoil system installed. My length of pull is 15” measured from center of recoil pad to trigger. The Gracoil system is adjusted in all the way, so it is as short as it gets. I find it hard to get the sight picture I want unless I crowd forward o the stock .
The stock has been shortened to allow for the Gracoil , and the is only about ½” of wood left before it is into the adjustable comb.
Is this length of pull on the nigh end of average ?? , not sure what options I have for fixing it

I am 6' tall, and I prefer a 14-1/4" to 14-3/8" length of pull on my trap and skeet guns

Ditto ... both for height and preferred LOP, with a Sporting
or Skeet gun. For a (pre-mounted) Trap gun, maybe 1/4" longer. For field guns with PG or POW stocks, 14 to 14-1/4" and about a 1/2" longer
for straight stock SxS with double triggers. Rifles, 1/2" shorter.

Much longer, the butt tends to get hung-up on clothing when
mounting, and much shorter, one risks a bump on the nose.

A 15" LOP is not particularly long for a guy 6'-4" nor is 13-1/2"
or a guy 5"-6". Your individual height, general build, length of your
neck and mounting style all need be taken into LOP consideration.
Overall, your individual LOP needs be comfortable, unrestricted and
provide a smooth, repeatable gun mount. What works for you may or
may not be the same for your buddy that is the same height, weight and build.

Rollin Oswald's book entitled: "Stock fitter's bible" while not perfect, is an excellent resource. It's available on amazon and if you can get past his fixation with cheerleaders in parades it has some very good info. There is an entire chapter on LOP, from which I will share an excerpt with you and I quote:

"With the gun mounted the base of your thumb should be 1.0 to 1.5 inches from your nose or glasses (and the heel of the pad on your collarbone and nearly even with the top of your shoulder)." endquote

If your a hair longer than that with a gracoil it may not be a bad idea. Bear in mind that with the shock absorber the whole gun is going to be moving backwards slightly more than normal when fired. Although if it's moving too much I'd dial up the tension.

Varying too far longer or shorter will cause all kinds of different issues from difficulty swinging and pointing, to excessive recoil to the shoulder to bleeding freely from the nose.

In case it's (somehow) unclear, he's referring to the strong (pistol grip) hand's thumb. Clarification is probably unnecessary, but well... you never know...

If you mount the gun and the distance from your thumb knuckle to your nose is more than 2.5", your LOP may be a bit too long. 3" is even considered acceptable, depending ob your preference.

Not sure what you mean by sight picture though. Do you mean you cant see the bead unless your crain forward? If thats the case, raise the comb. Things change as you move foward and back on the stock because the drop at comb is higher than the drop at heel. Yout cast also changes as the comb gets thicker towards the end of the comb.

I set my comb straight. That way, if Im wearing my coat (which increases the LOP) my comb height will not change. Some will complain a flat comb will smack your cheek, but I find that is most often fixed by changing the pitch.

thanks for all the great info from all of you. I want the gun to shoot about 60/40 for sporting clay. If I raise the comb higher the gun shoots higher, fine for trap ,but not for sporting clay. I know the sight picture of the middle bead and end bead to achive that.60/40 .Holding my head in a more comfortable position on the stock. i find the rib is ramped a little and the gun shoots high. Moving my head foward seems little uncomfortable but gun shoots right where I want it

Kenny,
You might try setting your comb to get your desired sight picture when the comb is parallel. My XS has a factory adj. comb and I get the same sight picture wherever I put my cheek. I think you should be able to get your gun to shoot where you want and not have to put up with even a bit of uncomfortable.

well I adjusted the stock parallel witht he rib. Raised it just a little on the front end of the comb. Found my gracoil system was set almost as light as it can go. I thought the more it moved the better, So it is much tighter now. Looks good , will see how it shoots tonight. Going to chew up some skeet targets.
Thanks for all the imput , will let you know how it shoots.
