as an old fart I have the 12-6 designation on my RPAL. If I sell all my 12-6 guns now - can I still retain the 12-6 status so I can buy another prohibited gun in the future? Do I have to retain at least one handgun to retain the 12-6 designation? thx for any info.

What else do you have that's a 12(6) that's for sale? :)

Yup!.........You need to have a 12-x firearm registered to you continuously to maintain 12-x "grandfathered" status.

Once you dispose of them all the status is gone forever.

I have 12-2, 12-5 & 12-6 status..........my PAL glows in the dark. ;)

The ONLY way a Canadian "newbie" will ever legally own a currently prohibited firearm is to get aggressive & active politically & FORCE the politicians to repeal the bad law that creates the prohibited categories.

Considering the dodo like docility of the Canadian Firearms Community there is more likelihood of a pig sprouting wings and flying to the moon.

A quick idea...might be worth doing, depending on what you've got, and how badly you want to sell off: Buy a cheapish placeholder 12(6) pistol, like a rusted $50 Astra Vestpocket Emboldener in 5.8mm Yeltsin, or something. Get that squared-away and registered first; then, only then, sell the nicer 12(6) stuff you already own off.

Watch out, you have to keep the right 12(6) gun that you own because they will say that that one is the one that qualifies you. If you dispose of it, even if you keep others, you will lose your 12(6) status.
Make sure you know which gun is which before you sell a 12(6).

Has this happened to you or anyone you know? The law doesn't specify which 12(6) as long as you possess one in the category.

Is this correct?

For the most part, this is fiction, but there is a small grain of truth to the story.

I believe a few people got caught in the red tape shuffle, gaining 12(6) with guns later denied registration. IIRC most were either imported between the law passing and the date of enactment, or we not properly re-registered into the new system.
