Lost Art of "Cut Shells"

That is amazing! I had never heard of this before, so I mentioned it to my old man and he knew all about it. Gee, thanks for letting me know about this handy little trick Dad!:D

Thanks for sharing this!

We used to do this all the time. The shotgun shells we had back in the 60's and 70's had fiber wads not plastic and were not very accurate. But if you did hit a rabbit there wasn't much left of it.

They work pretty well most of the time. I haven't tried them through anything with a choke though.

Every time you fire one you're running it through a choke. Somewhere between an 18" & 28" choke.
The OD of the hull is larger than the ID of your barrel, making your whole barrel a choke.

I have no need to that to my shotgun... my guess is if anything did go wrong it wouldn't be under warranty...

I learned this from my dad about 50 years ago. He also learned it from his dad when he was a kid. I shot boxes and boxes of cut shells through his auto 5, cresent double barrel and Winchester pump. All of them worked fine and if there was any damage done to them I have no idea as all still do.

I was taught to use the proper ammo for the application, if I want to shoot somethig with a slug I'll use a slug and not tempt fate.
These guys also have claimed that firing ammo of the wrong length in guns will not hurt them but I have seen otherwise.

....I've never once done this out of my rifled barrel with great results .....

ive done it in my martini henry with a adapter thing is though that's a .470" barrel or just about the same diameter as a .410 hull I would never do it in a normal gun for something like 12ga you are squeezing a piece of .795"+ plastic with shot in it acting like a solid down a .725"-.735" bore god forbid there is a choke fixed or not at the end
