Lousy Savages

I also just picked up the same gun in 22-250 from another member here. It shoots WAY better than i was expecting it to for the price paid. This is my first Savage but if they all shoot this good i'll be getting a few more for sure.

It may not be pretty, its a tool that does its job though:sniper:.
did you add that fluted barrel or get the stock barrel fluted?

what is the model, caliber and age of your Winnie vs. model, caliber and age of your Savages?

Why is it that dedicated Savages owners don't want to believe that others can outshoot them.

It was a 223WSM Super shadow (cheapest model), Savages were 2 Stevens, 308 and 270. 2 FCSS models, 243 and 270 WSM.... All rifles were new....

Actually out of around the 35 rifles that I have gone through in the last 7 years, I would say the Savages accuracy were average to on the bottom end of the rifles as far as accuracy goes. Rifles which out shot the Savages that I owned were include Tikka's, Sako's, Remingtons, Winchester, Kimbers, Weatherby's. Yep, they cost more, but they were all much nicer rifles. Savages are fine for the price, but they didn't outshoot my other rifles.

LOL! I'm not a Savage owner yet. I was just curious to know what Winchester you had and what Savage they outshot. I met someone who took us to one of our two local ranges who swears by Savage's. in fact, when he went to buy the Savage 111 kit from WSS the sales guy immediately tried to upsell him on Tikka T3 Lite's. he was having nothing of it and the sales guy said his $1500 Ruger would outshoot the $400 Savage. he took the challenge and lost. probably more to user error (tho he is a shooting competitor) then a bad $1500 Ruger, but it just shows even the base quality of rifles is so high now that they can almost compete fairly with high end items. might explain the plethora of new rifle lines in the sub $400 range (4x4, ATR, XL7, Stevens 200).

I'm planning on buying something in the next bit, just haven't been sold on what I should get yet. a friend is going to sell me his P17 for cheap if I like shooting it...if I do get it I'll have to put a decent scope on it, but I should still have enough left over for a mid range $500 rifle. :)

My cheap gun story. Mine is a Savage model 16FCSS in .270WSM. Stainless, DM and fugly black synthetic stock. But I did epoxy bed it. The scope is a Leupold VXIII 4.5-14 x 40, mounted in Weaver rings . Anyhow, that guns has been a lazer beam. I took it to H. Rempel in Calgary, he chopped 3" off the barrel (making it 21") and put a real nice crown on it. He did this while I watched. He remove the scope and trigger in order to chuck the barreled action in the lathe. When done, he put it all back together, charged me $30.00 and bought me coffee :) I returned to the range, to my disbelief, that cheap POS Savage with a classy scope mounted in cheap POS Weaver rings was shooting exactly the same 3/8" group in exactly the same spot that it did before it was dismantled and chopped down and put back together. I did loose 75 ft/sec muzzle velocity, but boy does that rifle pack and swing nicely. I had been thinking about getting a nice set of Tally rings for it, but then on the other hand I also believe that if it ain't broke, don't fudge with it.

Like I mentioned earlier, they are fine for the price, and accurate. But they were not magically more accurate than any of the other rifles that I have gone through. The 3 most accurate rifles I owned were a Winchester, Sako M-995 and a Weatherby Vanguard. Savages were also on the bottom end of the scale when it came to fit and finish. So for me I would not buy another. But lots of guys like them.

The Savage to me is all about value.

The first c/f hunting rifle I bought was a 116 in 7mmRM with the cheapo package scope. (Too much cartridge for a beginner, but that's another story LOL)

It shot cloverleafs with almost all factory ammo.

My last precision/tactical rifle was a 700 LTR with an IOR scope and a bunch of high speed goodies. It totalled about $3k. It shot groups around .5 - .6" at 200y with tailored handloads, bedded and trigger lightened. I had to sell it during a bad fight with the CRA LOL

My new precision rifle is a Savage 10FP-HS, currently with a Bushnell 3200 on it, no mods.

It is shaping up to shoot the same or better than the LTR, for less than half the price.

To me that's great value.
