Thanks for all those who made their recommendations in this thread a while back:

So I got the 20ga 870 Express for my birthday, got it custom fitted and had a Limbsaver installed on it and it is SWEEET!

Getting it properly fitted seemed to have made all the difference in the world. My boyfriend also picked up the 870 Express in the 12ga and I tried his out at the range last weekend... it hurt, but only because it was too long in the stock for me. I think I could have gotten away with getting a 12ga with a properly fitted stock but I am extremely happy with the 20ga.

There's just something about hearing the "click click" of a shotgun that makes me happy! :D

Love my 870 Express!

Finally. I never thought I'd read those words on this forum. From a woman, no less. :D

I, for one, am very happy to read you are so pleased with and chose your first shotgun to be an 870. Good for you. :)

May you shoot it lots and often. May it serve you well.

Glad you like your 870 the more you like it the more you shoot itw:h:

save your good hulls you might end up reloading for the 20g as it might be cheeper some one that reloads the 20 could give you more info on cost

in the future if you do pick a 870 12g you might be able to swap the stock from the 20g to increase the resale value if you want to sell the 20

Love my 870 express too. I put an adjustable Knox recoil reducing stock on it with an 18 inch barrel and shoot lots of buckshot with not a lot of recoil. When duck season comes I just change the barrel back to original and presto a duck annihilator. What's not to like.

glad to see you are enjoying your shotgun and that you got it fitted to you . one of the most important things in shot gun shooting .a gun that fits is a pleasure to shoot.thanks for sharing your experience with us.

870 express was my first gun my dad got me. Taken 4 deer, 10 turkeys and countless ducks/geeese with it. Love mine and will never sell it. Wish I could find a girl that was into guns like you LOL

When I shot it for the first time... it just felt good. It's only my 2nd firearm but I can't wait to add more to the collection!!

;) I got converted after I met my boyfriend so it's always possible to convert a girl after the fact. I think a lot of women want to try their hand at shooting... it's just a matter of finding someone who will take them through the paces.

I just bought my first 870 as well...Express tactical 12 ga. I don't reload shotgun yet but I'm going to be starting soon. I bought 100 rounds of Federal shotshells to get me shooting right away. I'm going to lay some hurt on a couple of sheets of old plywood and tree stumps tomorrow. I'm so excited I feel like I'm 16 again......:D:D.

you never did mention what you plan on using it for? You got a smooth bore or rib vent one?

I think you could handle the 12ga fine. I've yet to feel or hear the recoil from my express when shooting at a deer/turkey. Been shooting a 12g since I was 13, when I got mine.

It's a vent rib and a smooth bore (I think? Aren't the choices in bore between smooth and rifled?)... I might be slightly confused with your wording... what's the differentiation between your two choices?

I'm planning on using it eventually for bird hunting... more upland fowl than migratory. I'd also like to try out trap or skeet but that's later as I get more used to shooting a shotgun.

sorry I did word that wrong, I meant the 21" barrel (iron sights) or the 28" ( vent rib)

I'm assuming you have the 28" since its for bird hunting. Sounds like a great package. If you ever plan on using it for deer, get the rifled barrel and a good scope. Know a few people that have that set up and they are extremely accurate for a sluggun.

Congrats on the new gun!

I've been nothing but happy with my Express Combo. 28" vent-rib barrel w/removable chokes for birds, 20" improved-cylinder barrel for play time - money well spent. I bought a police-style synthetic stock for it as well. This cheap little shot gun works well with anything I feed it.

No poser gun, but truly a good value.

Good to know... I don't quite know where my collection will go from here (have a .22lr and now this 20ga) but I like that I have the option of getting a rifled barrel rather than a whole new gun.

I got the slight shorter 26" vent rib barrel and then got the stock cut down so my LOP is about 12". It fits me very nicely!

I considered getting the 870 Express Youth because of a slightly shorter LOP but the barrel length was only 18" and I still needed to cut the stock down more so it worked out to be more cost effective to do it the way I did.

How much did the 20" barrel cost? I think I'd like to get a shorter barrel eventually for play time as well. :D

I was looking at the short 20" 20 Ga barrels with rifled fiber optic sights and they range from $200-220 on average.

REMINGTON 870 20" BBL; FULLY RIFLED, RIFLED SIGHTS, NEW FROM COMBO, 20GA 3'' 1 NEW $200

Congrats on the new gun... if yours is half the gun mine has been, you should love it. I bought mine when I was 14... 16 years ago... I use it every year on upland game birds and rabbit, as well as ducks and geese. I have dropped it in salt water twice and dropped it in the old black slimy marsh muck a few times... still works great. Keep it clean and it will last you a lifetime.

my 20ga Youth is 12" LOP, with two 1/2" spacers you can add to make it 13".

as for the rifled shotgun barrel - do you need one?
IMO the only reason to own a shotgun with a rifled barrel is if you are restricted to a shotgun-only area and cannot use a rifle (and want to make >100yd shots).
also - ammo is also much more expensive for rifled shotguns - sabot slugs at $3-4 a pop arent really something you 'plink' with.
remember that there are always smoothbore slugs: 100 yard accuracy and performance with Brenneke slugs out of a smoothbore is pretty impressive.

$220 for just an 870 barrel seems silly to me: you can buy a new Express with whichever barrel you want for $350 (or a Stevens 200, Marlin XS7/XL7 for the same price). if you arent constrained to a shotgun-only area, and want something for deer, then you are better off putting that money towards a rifle.

IMO a logical progression for your next firearm would be something like a Marlin XS7 in .243 or 7mm-08, or perhaps an XL7 in .25-06. (or a Model Seven if budget allows).
