Back from deer hunting and couldn’t bee any happier.
Got this buck totally by chance as I was looking over a slope and heard something running on the rocks away from me on the other side of a few boulders.
I ran and stood on a boulder and saw this beautiful buck running away, I was so pumped and shaken up with adrenalin at the sight of his rack . I only saw his siloouet because the sun was just coming up behind him.

I tried whistling to get him to stop running but all that came out was some sort of stupid wind noise which worked and he stopped to look.

It was a split second aim through the iron sights of my marlin guide gun at his chest.
I was shooting a 45-70 300 grain barnes copper TSX. Over 39 grains of IMR 4227

I let one go, saw him jump with all 4 legs in the air and drop behind some rocks.

It’s the first deer I got using this gun and so far im in love with it.

At first I didn’t believe I got him, I was shaking like a leaf and doubted that I hit him shooting at that distance, standing on a not so steady rock shooting off hand.

We ranged the shot afterwards and it was 155meters.

The shot placement couldn’t have been better. Entrance just behind the front leg , obliterated the lungs and ripped the top part of his heart out and exited at the elbow joint on the other side.

Surprisingly and gladly there was almost no meat damage, very clean entrance and exit hole.
His weight is around 200lb and has a beautiful 4x4 rack to boot

One bang flop, just like in the movies.

You can see the top part of the hart is shot off, when I opened him up the heart was floating in the cavity.

overall i couldn't be more happy and needless to say i had a silly smile on my face for several days.

that looks real close to home - gotta know more

phishroy: nice job and nice buck.

I wondered about the location too. I know a lot of the bay looks just like that, but I can't help but think it looks pretty close to home (don't be confused by location in my personal info to the left - I'm working on repatriating myself). It's hard to pick out any spot with a lot of the trees and rocks being the same but you're not in Carling Township are you? Maybe Franklin Island? Or maybe it is the in the little bay on the outside of Canoe Cut by Pike Channel?

Or maybe as I said it all looks equally pretty like that and I'm just homesick. If I've got it right, but you don't want to give away your spot, could you please PM me to let me know? I won't be taking your spot as I have near-by (3-4 km from these guesses) spots of my own.

RG I have no need to be secretive.
You were spot on …. It’s off a point on Franklin Island and its open to all since it is crown land.

I regret not taking more pictures of the area, it really is nice, hopefully next year.

Thanks for letting me know! There are a few places on Franklin that I've often thought to go to, one spot out by Henrietta point looks good, and there is a spot I camped the summer before last on the north side too. But those are just two of a hundred particular spots I hope to check out!

Great job, I will tell you, being totally honest, you will have a hard time not using your Marlin 45/70 as your primary hunting tool from now on!!:D I've got a similar story with a bear years ago, since that time I've blasted lots of deer, bear, moose, and even one angry racoon with my Marlin .:D My 1895G is my faveriote gun hands down.

Congrats on a great hunt with a great rifle, good photos too!!

Thanks for sharing and welcome to club 45/70!!:D

Cheers
