Yesterday I got out to try out my first handload with my new (to me) Ruger #1B in .270. It is a beautiful rifle to look at (very, very close to mint condition) and it's topped with a 4-12x scope. It's real purpose for is to be used for deer on farmland and for use on pipelines and powerlines. Occasionally, I may launch some 110 grain V-Maxs at groundhogs for fun.

Anyway, getting back to the range report I've only tried one load - a 130 grain Winchester Power-Point over 55 grains of IMR-4350. I ended up getting consistent groups of 1.25" and an average chronographed velocity of 3184fps (I'm liking that 26" barrel). For the first load I've tried, from a bore that may need cleaning and brass that isn't collet sized yet I'm very happy indeed. I also have to say that the lack of recoil is a really nice thing too.

This one looks like a great companion to my #1V in .22-250

sounds great, you should get nice speed out of a 26" tube

how long is the throat on the rifle? you could be able to seat bullets out a long ways and gain some interior powder capacity for some extra gains there too

I'm not really sure how long the throat is but #1s have a rep for a long throat so I'm betting that getting fps won't be a problem at all.

BTW, god-damn Karen McDougall is hot!

Chuck:

Always liked the little Ruger Singles. Wanted one in 257 in the worst way.

While experimenting, you gotta try an old stanby - 60 gr. H4831 with a 130
Nosler Ballistic Tip or Partition. Work up from 57 or 58 gr. cautiously.
Jack O'Connor's old favourite was 62 gr. - which as I recall, he said he could get into a Winchester case with a bit of tapping & jiggling. Gracious knows, he played with a lot of .270 rifles and reloads - and took a s--tpile of game with it too !
I know, I know ... todays manuals say somewhat less - but get a squint at a manual from the 60's or early 70's. Trigger pulls were actually decent back then too !

That old standby load would shoot into 3/8" (5 shots) @ 100 yds. with my
custom Mauser.

Enjoy !

I've had two number ones. One in 7mm Mag that I gave to my Dad and then I bought a new .300 Win Mag. Beautiful rifles. They shot well and accounted for a few animals in the freezer for me.

Good luck with your .270. I love that calibre.

I shot my first buck, with a #1 international in .243 and was very confident with it, nice groups and nice handling. I suppose the b version would perform somewhat the same with the same barrel length, mine was a 26 incher also.
