Low Brass Semi Auto Question?

Hey guys,

I was hoping that someone could recommend an inexpensive target load that won't give me any problems.

Well I recently bought a 2003 3.5" browning gold hunter and I finally ended up trying the gun. It cycles all high brass loads with no problems what so ever from 2 3/4 to 3 1/2. Only problem is when I shoot some of the cheaper winchester low brass target loads I get some failures to eject once in a while. Sometimes it cycles them with no problems and other times the shells just get caught at the very end of the brass or lip on the way out during ejection. I've shot some older sellier & bellot low brass target loads with no problems at all and a few other older random low Brass target loads as well with no problems either. I can't find these old target loads anymore they were all just older shells I had laying around in ziploc bags from a long time ago and it would be nice if I could get cheap target shells that will always eject with no problems rather than using more expensive game loads when shooting clays.

I just want to know if anyone has had similar problem s with their semis? Will high velocity target loads work? Can anyone recommend some common and easy to get cheap target loads or high brass target loads that will work?

I was planning on just buying a few differenttarget loads and trying them out and if i have problems just use them in my pumps but it would be nice if I didn't have to experiment haha. I really like the gun , it shoots well and feels nice so I dont want to get rid of it for a minor annoyance like that. I know it will cycle low brass with no problems because of the older shells I shot, just not the winchester target loads that I was using. Im just hoping to get some recommendations.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Not that this helps at all, but I've had zero problems with my Beretta A400. It has cycled thousands of cheap winchester, federal, fiocchi, score, challenger, etc. Extremely rare to get a failure of any kind. Like, 1 out of 500, if that? That uncommon I consider to be statistical anomalies, and don't attribute to the gun or ammo at all.

The score target loads are considerably higher brass than the winchester, challenger, federal cheap stuff. Maybe look into them? WSS stocks it usually.

The problem is it is not brass it is aluminum that's why they are cheap brass is exspensive some of the hi brass stuff is actually steel .

Winchester and federal cheap stuff is aluminum, score and challenger is brass. Can't remember if fiocchi or remington is brass or aluminum.

Pretty sure none are steel...

Scotty, you have it backwards, almost none are aluminium, most promo loads use a steel base instead of brass. Most skeet/trap clubs have a magnet fro picking up empty hulls, only Federal Gold Medal and Remington STS/Nitro 27 hulls still use brass.

Have you tried Challenger "Handicap" 3 dram , 1 1/8 ounce target loads yet? They are about the same price point as any other target load and will likely be "zippy" enough to operate that 3 1/2 inch action.

Thanks for all the input everyone. The gun cycles everything really well except for the Winchester target loads, and even with those it cycles its not like they don't work at all its just every so often I get a jam.

No I haven't tried any challenger loads except the slugs, Im planning on getting some of the challenger shells because a friend and some others told me there's high brass challengers and low brass with different velocity's. I know a few places where I can get cases of challenger from 68-74 so ill try a few boxes and if they work well ill grab some cases. I think challenger is the best option at this point since challenger keeps coming up, if not and they give me problems worst comes to worst I have to find out the hard way and just buy a box of every common target load I can find and try them one by one to see which ones work well and which don't hahah.

You may want to try a Google search and read up on the 3.5 Gold Hunter as they were known to be problematic with lighter loads.

I won't use the Winchester promo target loadings just because of poor reliability.

I had those chrome colored based winny jam in pumps before. Just try a different load with real brass and your problem will go away.

Winchester AA uses brass too.

The Winchester Super Target and the Wallyworld Valu Paks are complete crap ammo. The only promo loads I will use in my guns are Challenger and Remington Gun Club.

Is Challenger considered "promo" ?
Challenger is what I shoot most often and I'd put it into the mid-range, slightly better than promo loads but not in the premium class. Kent would be another brand in that category.

Challenger is definitely the best value. My local SAIL store is selling it for the same price as Winchester Super Target. It's a no-brainer.

yeah I know those are mainly the older models from the early 90s and from what I hear those problematic early models don't cycle anything
everyone I know that has a newer one loves them, I love mine too

Well, when you're right, you're right.

The ones that I assumed were aluminum (Never really looked at them very closely) are definitely steel, and the ones that I assumed were brass are also steel. Or the most magnetic brass you've ever seen, haha. I only have Federal top gun, Challenger, and Remington gun club shells here to check, but definitely all steel.

I stand corrected. Wonder why they would bother plating(?) them to look like brass? So people think they're better?

Challenger is definitely not cheap promo. I'm not sure what would stop it from being considered top quality. The local club uses lots of it.

Challenger is definitely better than promo but not quite premium. While there is some overlap the distinguishing features of premium ammo are brass case heads, the ease with which the hulls can be reloaded, an 8 point crimp and the uniformity and hardness of the lead used in the shells. Challenger is what I shoot most often. I will shoot Winchester AA when they offer their rebate and an occasional flat of Kent.
