Not the book, just the picture...

I have a low budget build in mind. It goes something like this:

I am trying to find a used stainless steel Butler Creek folding stock and a used stainless/silver 10/22. I am thinking about using a 6" Charger barrel or maybe a custom Dlask stainless contour barrel. I am just wondering if anyone has ever done something similar and has any ideas or advice to share. If anyone has the "Exotic Weapons System" book, I would be interested to find out more about it.
Cheers

It should also be noted that with a short barrel such as you have shown, and a folding stock, you will be under the minimum overall length requirements, and will have, I believe, a prohibited firearm. Due to our gun laws making no sense - if you started with a Charger, because it's already a pistol ( restricted ) and built this you would be okay. It would of course be restricted. If I'm wrong about this somebody should be along shortly to correct me. I try and stay current with the laws, but there are a lot of intricacies that don't make any logical sense.

Cant you have a firearm reclassified from NR to R?

as far as I remember you can only get away with a 16" barrel with the bc folder and still be nr.

Unfortunately not. Mine required changing from 16" to the standard ~18" to meet the 26" OAL requirement.
Just guessing from memory, but I think 17" was the shortest I could of went on the barrel.

Looks like a mini14 gas block was used to mount a front sight.

I have no interest in a restricted 10/22, but the shorty 10/22s with full stocks and short barrels look pretty good too and remain non-res.

I know that for many people, who do not have local access to a range, a restricted 10/22 makes absolutely no sense. I already have 2 non-Restricted 10/22 short barrel rifles (one 8" and a 12.5"). This type of build is certainly not for everyone, however in my case I already have several restricted .22's including a GSG 1911 style pistol and a .22 AR. I am lucky enough to live within walking distance of an indoor range and a 15 minute drive from an outdoor range.

I like this TD concept, but unfortunately this would probably not fit within my budget:

Frugal shooter m'self, what do you consider "Low Budget"?

I am thinking about $450 or so total. My firearms account has just over $300 in it and that is all the cash I am willing to sink into this project, however that will not be enough. I will need to work for the rest. I will supplement that by selling a few odds and ends I always have laying around in my gun room AND hopefully by finding a nice 10/22 package deal that will result in a bunch of parts I can sell off. You often will see a 10/22 rifle package on the EE with a few magazines, a loader and maybe a scope, red dot or case. Some people insist on not splitting up the package, but the individual parts are sometimes worth more than the package price if you are willing to put in the time and effort to part it out. That's my plan anyway...

Any idea of the cost to reclassify the rifle to restricted? Sounds like youll need to do this to make thongs legal.

Used 10/22 $250ish.
$200 8" dlask barrel
$100 rifle stock.
=$450 - old barrel and stock.
$350-380 total with no scope or extra mags.

That is an interesting question. I was thinking that it is as simple as a phone call, kind of like a restricted transfer, but perhaps I need to take it to a verifier. Anyone who has gone through this change of status from NR to R please chime in.

Your numbers are very close to what I was thinking. However I would really prefer a 6" barrel so this may end up being a little more than a Dlask 8" unless I get lucky. Plus I would like an inexpensive compact red dot. Something like the one pictured in post #11, anyone recognize the make and model?

Looks like a bushnell trs-25 or maybe a knockoff.
You can get the read deal with highrise mount for $120 or less if you shop around.
Proline in Calgary had them. Very nice guys there! Fyi, some store want $160 + shipping for the same thing!

Having looked at the pictures of a TRS-25 I don't think that is the same sight, although it is certainly similar enough for my purpose. I think the sight in the picture may be an Aimpoint T-1 or a knock-off. There are certainly lots of similar T-1 style knock off red dots for $25 and up on Aliexpress, although I can't find any in silver.
