Low budget Minded Hunting Rifle Options

Ps vanguards don't shoot well
ammo is way over priced
weatherby opens up there head spacing to allow for over pressure basically not tight
sloppy and they shoot that way got 3 buddies with them all shoot like crap
group 1.5-2 at 100 take it out to 300 and there bad enough to miss a deer

Where did you get this BS from??

I have 5 Vanguards, and there is no problem shooting MOA or less with every one of them.

Weatherby does NOT open their headspace to allow for high pressure ammo.
However, the Mark V Weatherbys generally have more freebore, if that is what you are talking about.

This does NOT apply to the Vanguard, which is made by Howa of Japan.

Only the Actual Weatherby Magnum ammo is expensive...you can buy Vanguards in many standard chamberings.

So much erroneous info floating around out there.

Buy a Vanguard with confidence. They are one of the best deals out there for the dollar spent.

Regards, Dave.

I'm also a weatherby fan, my brother has an older vanguard in 300win and I liked it so much I bought a vanguard 2 in 270win. I didn't get a combo package but I put a leupold 3x9 on it and it's definitely a life long keeper.

Listen to the guys that are telling you a rem 700 sps
in a 308 you can hunt anything
great ammo selection rifles 700 bucks and throw a Nikon 6x18 and you'll be good for life
Or listen to the guy telling you the swede in 6.5 x 55
off tradex used for 250-400
same scope again great round easy shooter I gust spent 4000 on a custom rig
just dumped 1 elk and 2 white tails with mine blew a base ball size hole out the back side
Y
See, THAT'S what I need. Now I know why everyone has $4-5K in custom hunting rigs. I really wish someone had told me this before. I could have been saving ammo using one round to take an elk and two white tails.

Really? Where to start with the wrong is this post?

Vanguards (esp., the 2s) shoot VERY well. I have been quite impressed. My next rifle will be a vanguard 2, just trying to devide chambering. I shoot a buddies .22-250 and hit clays at 300yds, EASILY AND CONSISTENTLY.

How is Federal Blue Box .308 ammo any more expensive shooting it from a Vanguard?

Head spacing to reduce pressure??!! Better take another look at your terminology before you spout your "facts", you are looking for free-bore, or how far away the rifling starts from the chamber, also known as throat.

Maybe your buddies need a lesson, I have 6 hunting companions who have them in one chambering or another and ALL shoot quite well for them and they all shoot VERY well for me. Accepted kill zone on a deer is 10" (I prefer 8") 2" @ 100 is 6" @ 300. How is that a miss? I have barely sported Nagants and .303s that are iron sighted and could shoot deer at 300yds using that 10" circle(again, I don't, but that is me).

Please, ensure your advice is as accurate as your $4K custom rig before to start spewing it here to people actually looking for assistance. There are many people here who have been doing this for DECADES and recognize pure BS when they see it, you damaged your credibility.

Oh, and, DANG!, Eagle Eye beat me to this, but needed the addition to my post count.....

Nothing wrong with reinforcing the facts!! I couldn't believe my eyes when I read that post from Tikkam65!

The cheapest good rifle I would buy is a vanguard. Friends, family and I hAve had/currently have about 10 over the years. Excellent firearms.

My Vanguard S2 .300win shoots 3 holes in the same 1inch square at 100 yards with Winchester Power Max. Sorry about your buddies misfortune, but there isn't anything wrong with the rifle, at least not mine. Picked mine up at Prophet river for $529, an no that's not a sale price.

last two rifles I have bought came scoped and were under 350 each...they were used...Really you can't get a better deal then a good used rifle.

No joke everyone I know there vanguards can't shoot better groups than 2 inches at 100 yards and at 300 they really start to open up
we are long range shooters with custom rigs nothing we do can make those vanguards shoot

Your buddy doesn't know how to shoot. I have yet to meet the Vanguard that won't shoot under 1.5 inches at 100. Most of the ones I've seen will do an inch or better with the right ammo. Best deal out there for under $800 IMO.

No offence intended, I just hate to see a good rifle getting trashed.

I agree with that + i will tell you i have a S2 in 257 Wtby Mag and with the Wtby 87 gr factory load it is MOA up to 300 metres, (furthest i tried it), 529.00 i paid @ Prophet, it dont get better than that for that kind of money... JP.

When I moved North I decided that I didn't want to drag my M70 Super Grade around on ATVs or tossed in a boggan. So I bought a beater - Stevens 200 in 30-06. One could say it was the ultimate truck gun. It's ridiculously accurate (sub 1" with handloaded 180gr Partitions every day and often under 1/2" when things go well) and I never have to worry about it getting beat up or a scratch on the stock. The trigger is good (adjusted to pretty reasonable weight and crispness but not as good as an aftermarket trigger) and the stock was hit with black rattle-can because I didn't like the grey stock and I was bored. I put Talley Lightweights on it and topped it with a 3-9x Burris Signature that I had on hand. So far I've only used it on a moose and a muskox but it works well and I can't recommend it more highly.

Now that I'm moving back down South I'll probably send it down the road and use one of the rifles that I didn't bring North with me. Doesn't change the fact that the platform is solid, accurate, lightweight and you won't cry yourself to sleep if it gets scratched.

I got my 257 S1 from WSS on blowout, wood stocked for $420 when the S2 came out. Accidentally walked in 5 minutes after the sale tags went on and sprained my wallet. You don't even wanna know what they were selling the synthetics for. And yeah, it'll shoot MOA as long as you keep the copper fouling out and don't get it too hot. Man that load cooks, I swear you could light a cigarette off the barrel.

Got a Stevens in 223 for my coyote gun and I'll agree with you on all counts. I buffed all the sharp edges on the stock with a Dremel and put in a Rifle Basix trigger because of my hatred for the stock one. Great beater gun, it gets scratched and full of snow and I don't give a ####!

At 3900 fps ( 87 gr) it not a pussy caliber but it is a lazer... JP.

Haven't read through the entire thread, but Trade-Ex has the Zastava M98 Mauser in 7mm RM for $399. I've had both the .300 WM and 7mm RM and there isn't much if any practical difference between the two.

IMO letting the barrel heat up like that is one of the main reasons for poor barrel life.
