I’ve never felt like 3x was too much magnification, maybe they had it figured out 40 years ago with your basic 3-9. Do you shoot with both eyes open?
this
it took me a loooong time to finally come around to the occams razor solution but always felt it was just way too vanilla, I've dealt with coyotes on the fly at 30 yards with 4x bottom ends, coyote doubles inside 100 as well, about as fast paced action as one could get and not a big target, I would use anything but a 3-9, I found 6x to low on the top end on actual big game hunts where I had time to place it on critters around 200 yards, yes I can shoot a red dot at moa at that distance but when I had time...I wanted more than 6x, didn't need it...wanted it, so search continued...
finally tried a trijicon accupoint 3-9x40 green dot duplex, it was other things I'd heard about it that made me look into them, definitely not the magnification range and really the 3-9x numbers just turned me off as always, the quality and the glass and the weight were the big 3 things that drew me to it, not even the battery free illuminated dot was as high on the list as non-illuminated was all I had every used.... and here's what I've learned since, , several things I'll try to recount of what impresses me so much about it as a hunters scope, 1. that illuminated dot is very intuitive and fast for hunting, instinct takes over and that dot is amazing, became one of my favourite things and now won't live without it if I can help it, 2. the quality and glass is there, as expected, tracking and return to zero has proven to be on par with the reputation, the glass is like turning on a lightbulb compared to leupold 1" stuff, and 3. the magnification range is ideal for true combined predator and big game hunting that I do, and when the quality of glass is that good, 9x seems stronger or better than the 9x suggests and on par with 10x leupolds I have, I don't believe they exaggerate their magnification range as much as leupold does
and good luck finding any of those low magnification range scopes that weigh less than the 13.4 oz of the 3-9x accupoint! imo if looking for the speed options to fit compact or faster bush like builds with some flexibility to go longer this scope is highly underrated, it can do fast! the 3x with a dot will run with just about anything but having 9x of high quality image with the dot has made easy work of 420 yard whitetail also, and for the kids 355 and 300 yards no sweat
to me there's no in-between a holosun 407/507c or accupoint 3-9x40...one or the other, done with all the middle stuff and the compromises that come with them, one is shotgun bead fast can deal with mpbr and some minimal holdovers beyond it, and the other is as quick as about any other scope will be with flexibility to go 600 (or double the red dot) without struggle
amazing to me to have a 1-6 or 1-8 small objective they all seem to weight 1.5 lbs just to get started, bulky tanks...nope, better option available in the 3-9x accupoint
you'll need to spend every bit of $1k to get one, I think they run around $1050 to $1100, so it hits your budget window...just
And I get it doesn’t have the right ‘look’, that bothered me too for certain shorter range projects, but even if it never leaves 3x it’s still lighter by a mile and better than almost any of them. If you dig you will see the odd AR guy who’s figured that out too. Don’t be afraid to embrace the ugly, function is more important. Lead don’t follow.
There are people out there driving ridgelines lol, they definitely work from the objective side of the brain. Lol expand your thinking.
