Hey all. I'm looking to replace my older Redfield 4x32 wide angle scope on my 458 wm. The reasons being I can't stand the wide angle bell and the cross hairs are super fine which absolutely sucks in low light while aiming at a black bear
The glass is clear however just can't see the cross hairs
I was thinking of going with a new fixed power Redfield with a heavier duplex reticle but was curious if anyone uses a 2-7x32 or a 1-4x20 and which brands can take the recoil. The original owner used a Bushnell banner 1-4 on It but his hand loads where not heavy at all. I load not to max but Hot enough to make it known that I'm shooting something big
I do often take the scope off and use the open sights as well so I'm not looking to spend more than $500
What are my best options under $500 for low variable or fixed 20-32 mm with a heavy duplex and gloss blue finish?

If you could find an older fixed 3X Leupold with the thick crosshairs that's what I'd do..........Harold

1-4x Leupold or my personal favourite 1.5-5x Leupold. Turn the power down a bit and they're surprisingly bright even in the near dark. Bonus is the eye relief which keeps it from becoming embedded in your skull.

I have a 2.5x20 on my double rifle. I'd like to have slightly higher magnification for my 458 wm in case I decide to take a 200-250 yard shot. A variable would offer that plus larger field of view on lower settings for thick bush and close shots. I took a bear at about 6' from the muzzle last year. All I saw was fur thru the scope so I just point and shot for center mass. Eye relief is a concern as several of my buddies have bled on my rifle already. Ironically they were the ones who said recoil doesn't bother them and think they're 300 Wm are cannons. Newer shooters actually handle it better and find its not as bad as they thought.

I've got a 2.5-8 VX3 on mine, and a 1.75-6 VX3 on my .416. Both are available with heavy duplexs that are very visible for low light and fast shooting. Both work well close up and also as far as you are likely to shoot a .458.

I had a fixed 2.5 and had to dump it due to poor low light performance.

for sure the 2.5x20 is not the best to shoot under the moon or at night but for the rest this is not a bad scope at all ....

I use a Leupold VXR 1.25-4x20. A bit more than $500 if I remember correctly though. I do quite like it though, good performance.

I started hating mine when I had a herd of Cape Buffalo at 20 yards, on three sides of us and going for 4. It was a really lousy time to discover that I could barely see the heavy duplex. It's surprising how much soul searching and cost benefit analysis a feller can do at a time like that

would you think that a german 4 or 1 will have made a different scenario?
