low pressure loads for an old SxS

I am looking into making up some shells for an old SxS 12g that I'll have in possession soon. My primary objective will be to fire this safely and without damaging myself and the gun. While I'm not new to reloading, I'm completely new to reloading shotgun and blackpowder.

I've been reading up and researching but am hoping you guys can help point me to sources for 12g brass shells and equipment. I don't intend on shooting it much...but want to touch it off at least a couple of times...safely. I would hope to avoid another reloading press in lieu of some simple hand tools.

Is getting some brass shells/wads/tools/etc worth it for the very infrequent amount that I might shoot this? or am I just as well off canabalizing some modern 12g light trap loads...sub'ing in BP...and reassembling a light shot load?

And...I don't have any references on hand for low pressure BP loads...could you point me to some good ones that have been proven out?

Please and thanks

The rule of thumb for black powder shotgun loads is equal volume of shot and powder. For denser patterns increase the shot a bit.
Assuming the gun is 12 bore, you could use a 3/4 or 7/8 ounce shot measure would be light loads. 1 or 2F will produce a bit less pressure than 3F.
To shoot the gun occasionally, don't bother with brass cases.
If you rework trap loads, don't use the plastic shot cups. Lubed wads work better with black.
Check the chamber length.
See if you can scrounge an old roll crimping too.
Cut cases to length. Scoop powder. Ram wads firmly. Scoop shot. Top wad. Roll crimp.

Incidentally, light loads aren't really low pressure. You will still get at least 6-7000 pounds pressure. The gun needs to be sound.

Thank you! I'll be taking it slow and careful. I can machine a bar to check chamber length and cast the chamber shape if need be.

I found this article to be good...trying to cross reference other sources to check info.

I'm not sure I'll ever shoot anything besides a paper target/box with this one...so pattern shape/density isn't an objective at this point. Never say never though.
