Low recoil deer

Shucks without adding into the equation that my 270 cal 6.8 SPC XCR-L is a piston driven semi-auto that reduces felt recoil energy/velocity I get depending on the load between 5.5 - 6 ft lbs energy/velocity...

a 7 lbs 30-30 loaded with 150gr bullets @ 2400fps averages between 10 - 12 recoil energy/velocity...

Similar situation with an older friend just last year. He had stopped hunting because his .30-30 kicked too hard and his shoulder could not take it. I suggested he try my wife's Savage 111 in .243Win. He liked it, bought one and killed his first deer in 7 years.

I am sure that a semi-auto .243 would have next to no recoil, and if he went with the SKs and you reload, just mexican match some soft points on them

Rookie you are corrct on .243 Semi recoil.

In my Remington 7400 in .243, scoped, 5 rounds and sling using original Remington bakelite butt plate , felt recoil not much different than my 14.5" barrel AR with mil-spec hard plastic, collapsible butt, and thats in 5.56NATO(.223REM)!

If going this route Skokie, I'd add a new Wonder Pad with butt stock LOP cut to around 12.5" unless this elderly gentleman is 5'10" or taller. This will help eliminate pulling the stock hard into top of shoulder to obtain a correct sight picture.

.243 vs 7.62X39, i'd say stay with the hydostatic shock kid, theres a million great premium factory loadings for the .243. Economical and readily avaliable ammunition is everywhere.
 
I find my 30-06 Browning BAR to have as little recoil as my Marlin 30-30 or maybe even a little less recoil. It is an absolutely joy to operate.

I am surprised that a Ruger Mini 30 has not been suggested. With a good recoil pad, they are real pussycats. Mine is a pleasure to carry (way lighter and handier than most semi auto 243's) and will consistently shoot 2.5" groups at 100 yards with handloads, 3-4" with surplus ammo. Plenty good for deer. Muskoka is short range deer county and the Mini 30 is pretty popular in our Haliburton deer camp.
 
Thinking outside the box, you could set up something with a muzzle brake. Dlask arms makes several types and has the expertise to install them on pretty much any rifle. Here is a sponsor that makes / installs them as well:

Heavy .223 with a brake and a recoil pad would take care of any shoulder pain.

Caveats:
-I personally wouldn't take a deer past 100 meters with a .223. Stepping up to .243 with a brake should still be mild recoiling and get you to 150 yards easily.
-He and anyone near him when the trigger is pulled will *need* good ear pro.

Cool thing about a good set of active headsets like the MSA Sordins is you will actually be able to hear better than wearing no pro until you need the noise abatement. I have the waterproof Pro-X and am very impressed with them. I know lots don't bother with ear protection for hunting, but I won't be around even a .22 rimfire anymore without it. A braked centerfire can mess up your hearing faster than you can say "tinnitis".

all he needs is a .243 cal and a LIMBSAVER recoil pad for his sore shoulder ..if he gets a muzzle brake don't forget to order a HEARING-AID he will need it ..don't ask me why i know .....
 
I have had plenty luck with 22 hornet but for someone new to hunting I would recommend 6.5x55 feels like shooting a 243 with wonderful results on all big-game in North America I wouldn't hesitate using it.
 
Ny nephew is born with a smaller arms and is not very strong so i asked me ,uncle i would lide to go deer hunting with you, i had this little 357 Trapper that i won in a contest ,i had no use for it, so slowly in the summer i started him to shot it a couple of hundred round in the whole summer and he got the hang of it ... Last fall i killed is third deer and is very good shotter, i am very proud and you can see the hapiness in is eyes... JP.
