Low recoil, flat shooting deer, sheep, elk gun?

buy a 300 win mag and put a big ass break on it......

my budy has a 300 ultra mag with a break on it from pgw and says it shoots like a 22-250......but loud.......

I was always the guy who said my 308 wil do any thing......but that gun with a good rest.....opens up your options a little...no....

after my 204 ruger.....the canon is next,
 
In considering what you want to accomplish you have to ask yourself what you can reasonably expect out of a given calibre. It would seem that prudence points to a limited selection. So suppose you find yourself on an Elk hunt and in an extreme situation. Assuming you've narrowed your selection to the .260, 6.5x55, .270, and 7mm-08, none may be ideal. However, I would personally prefer the advantage of bullet weight, which points to the 7mm-08.

Then again, you're a handloader and may be able to wring out some very impressive performance from the 7x57.
 
Buy her the biggest gun that you can comfortably shoot. She will love the gift but will beg you to trade for your current rifle. One stone, two birds, all good.
