Lower muzzle flash pistol powders?

I 've been reloading 5.7 grains of 231 behind a 200 grain Frontier semiwadcutter (in 45 ACP) for quite a while now, in part because I had lots of it ( still have 15+ lbs)- couldn't resist a bargain.

The load just barely makes IPSC major in my 5 inch 1911, and there was some flash from the muzzle but not excessive. But now I've been shooting a 4.5 inch M&P 45 and everybody tells me the muzzle flash is really spectacular plus of course it doesn't make major any more.

So can someone recommend a powder that is a little cleaner and doesn't generate as much flame?- i'm thinking of trying out IDPA and am told that these can involve low light scenarios where a large muzzle flash would be detrimental.

All suggestions welcome.:)

Use a faster powder such as Tightgroup. It is about the right speed to make Major with a 200gr bullet and keep pressure just under max.

You can also go with an even faster powder, such as Clays (check data with plated bullets). This will ensure 100% burning of the powder before the bullet leaves the muzzle.

Win 231 is much slower than Tightgroup and the muzzle flash is in part because of unburnt powder, only about 97% of the powder is burned in a 5" barrel. (Quickload data)
