lower power scopes

I've noticed military trained snipers often use 10x or 16x scopes to shoot out to 1000yrds. Does anyone have experience with this? I've got a Sako TRG 42 in 300 win mag on order and I'm thinking of getting the 3x20x50 S and B for it. is that enough magnification for that rifle?

I've shot out to 800yds on mini-IPSC steel ( the cheap ones from Bass Pro) with 10x. It was no problem to get on target, but more magnification would have been helpful, IMO. A military sniper using 10x to 1000yds on human sized targets seems reasonable to me. 3-20x should be more than enough for 1000yds at any reasonably sized target.

FWIW, I can see over 700yds to the next fence line out my office window and 16x is enough to easily see the fence posts. It's a typical 4 strand barb wire country fence between quarter sections, so probably 5" diameter posts or so. Getting on a post and hitting it would be no problem with 16x if the gun is precise enough for the job.

I have used low powered scopes of 10x and 8X out to 1K with no issues at all .
I also shoot irons in fullbore rifles out to 1K, but our aiming point is large , 44" IIRC.
When we initially zero at 1,000 at our club before we go on the electronic target , we shoot at the large steel which is 3MOA
Mostly it depends on how small your target is , not the power factor of the scope.
