Lowering POI of 6.5x52 Carcano

BTW OP, you are using the battle sight notch under the flip-forward section of the rear sight, right?

Not all of these rifles have the flip over type rear battle sight. Some of them have a solid, fixed rear sight that's been sweated onto the barrel.

My rifle has the flip over rear sight and when using the fixed sight underneath, you can't see the top of the front sight when using the bottom of the V notch.

Post #1, OP states that one of the two is adjustable.

Thanx, I had forgotten that. I don't usually go back and read each thread from the beginning, after reading it the first time.

I just thought that I should throw in that with these rifles it's impossible to see just the tip of the front sight at the bottom of the V when using the lower fixed sight on the flip over types.

So I went out today with some new loads. In order to zero the m38 at 100 yards I had to go all the way down to 20 grains of 4064. I didn’t bring my crony but I wouldn’t imagine that pushes the 140gr bullet too fast. 24 grains seems to be what will zero it at 300 yards.

Posting these numbers for anyone who’s interested and don’t wanna mod the sights. Myself, I will probably find middle ground and use maybe the 24gr load with a front sight that’s been built up.

To use the original 32gr loading would take a front that’s too tall to even be sensible.

Holy smokes, that sounds like a small charge. Confident there are no low pressure / small charge issues?

Maybe run it through the crony, you might be in the neighbourhood of pistol powder loads for that case?

Everything seems fine. I made 6 of them and all fired fine. Consistent group.

It's not a dangerously reduced charge for the 6.5x52. If he's worried about it at all, I suggest some Dacron fibre fill to keep the powder against the primer.

There is no load that will shoot to point of aim at 100 yds, they were made that way so a soldier could aim at the enemy's mid section out to 300/400 yds without hold over. I made a cap that friction fits tight over the front sight. It has a blade on top for sighting. Not perfect but easier than making repla ement sight from scratch.
