My wife and I are going to a local Edmonton indoor handgun and long gun range in the near future to fire our new 12ga O/U and 12ga Mossberg shorty shotgun. Unfortunately, the only 12ga ammo the range allows is slugs.

My wife and I used to shoot our 7.62x39 rifle which is now, legally anyway, useless. So we're both familiar with the recoil of that firearm.

I shot some clays in my youth with a 12ga, but I have never shot slugs. My wife has never fired a shotgun. Therefore, we'd like to shoot the absolute lowest-recoil slugs available. After a bit of research, I've narrowed down the field to the following:

-Fiocchi 12 Gauge 2-3/4″ Low Recoil Slugs 7/8 oz, 1300 fps

-Aguila 12 Gauge 1-3/4" 5/8 Oz Lead Slug, 1250 fps

-Federal Shorty Shells 1 Oz, 1145 fps

-Challenger 12 Gauge Target Rifled Slug, 2-3/4" 1 Oz, 1300 fps

-Remington Managed-Recoil Slugger Rifled Slugs 2-3/4", 1 Oz, 1200 fps.

The Fiocchi are supposedly the 3-gunner's choice. The Aquila and Federal shortys are supposedly light recoil for a slug. The Challenger are the least expensive and Canadian made.

Anyone shot all of the above and, if so, which do you think has the lowest recoil? If you know of a lower-recoil slug, please let me know.

About recoil; does felt-recoil by different ammo in a single, specific shotgun/butt-pad combo just a matter of physics? To boil it all down, does the felt recoil vary directly with the slug's foot-lbs of energy at the muzzle -- that is, the lower the energy, the lower the felt recoil? Or do the powder and wad-design affect the felt-recoil -- say by "spreading out" the acceleration of the slug over the entire length of the barrel as a spring/shock-absorber might?

Thanks for the education.

Aguila and Federal shorty slugs have negligible recoil. Should be top choice. Not all pumps cycle them well (semis don't at all).

Any 2.75 slugs branded "low-recoil" should be manageable, especially in the 1200fps range.

Limbsaver AirTech recoil pads save a lot of grief, in general.

I have some “low recoil” challenger slugs. They are low “brass” and man are they low recoil. Knocks the hell out going still but no where near the kick. The score “low recoil” slugs I had were high “brass” and they still had a decent kick, not as smooth as the challenger ones.

Do you have access to any, legal, semi's with a buffer spring? My 10y/o was mag dumping with my MK12-May she rest in peace, poor girl was lost to the Covid. (The mk12, not the 10y/o)
