Lowest Recoil Caliber for Deer?

I had a girlfriend, (and with any girl I spend time with eventually she is taught how to shoot) who clearly showed discomfort shooting one of these. 5'6", 130lbs strong girl who grew up on a farm too. A proper recoil pad would probably have cured that.

OP - as has repeatedly been suggested, 6mm Rem, 243 Win, 257 Roberts/6.5X55 at most for a recoil sensitive woman. That's what I'd buy for a lady, whenever I find a keeper.
 
I didn’t see anyone recommend a Savage Lady Hunter yet. It comes in 22-250 REM, 223 REM, 243 WIN, 270 WIN, 30-06 SPFLD, 308 WIN, 6.5 CREEDMOOR, and 7MM-08 REM. Some are a really good cartridge for deer and some are not. I have never shot one or looked at one too closely but have heard they are really good for women. They seem to fit them nicely and have a real good recoil pad. Maybe you could find someone who has one for her to try. It also could be as others have suggested, the firearms she has used are too big for her and don’t fit well or have poor recoil pads causing excessive recoil.
 
yep, im with everyone else, anything under a 130gr .270win is girl friendly depending on how much 'lady' is in her :)


in sayin that had a sheila hunter over yesterday doin some target practise, she shot a 35whln for a while then kind of got talked into 30-06 t3 by some fellas an has been using that pretty well, although she'd hardly shot targets past 100m regularly.

Gave her the 222 an shot average groups but loved the calibre an noted how nice it was to shoot... So that's understandable, very tame firey round.

After a dozen shots she moved onto the Remington 700 .270 win with 130gr handloads.. She shot a 1.2 inch group at 100 with one clearly pulled to the right... I was impressed. not only with her but the rifle :)

some will know of the differences in the Rem700 sps with 24inch barrel and pachymyr(sp) recoil pad from the factory....
compared to a Remington pump 35whln
and a T3 synhetic 30-06...

That .270 woulda felt like a Charm mate!!

I got my old lady a .243 Savage Youth, it doesn't weigh anything and, with a Muddy Girl camo case and sling, pink trigger lock, ear pro and glasses with forty rounds of ammo was $400 at Cabela's.

I taught my son's girlfriend to shoot and hunt a few years ago and bought her a Youth Model Savage 243.

She has very small hands and couldn't grip a full sized rifle properly.

If it had been available, I would have bought the same rifle in 260 Remington, I could have loaded bullets that would have penetrated better if she wanted to hunt anything bigger than a deer.
 
Geez, you'd figure there would be at least a little feedback from the OP by now.

If the rifle ergonomics are crap on her, she's not going to enjoy herself no matter what caliber you put in it.

.243 or 30-30 with a recoil pad.. would reduce recoil quite a bit!

Be sure to get it custom fit for her and show her how to get a proper stance, which would probably negate the need for a recoil pad to begin with.
 
Remember, recoil is effected by rifle weight as well as the weight of the ejecta and velocity. If you increase the weight of a 7mm-08 by a half pound it will decrease the already mild recoil while maintaining a more effective chambering than the 243.

The best example of recoil mitigation is three of ATRS' 50 cals. One 28 lbs, one 40 lbs and one 65 lbs. Recoil ranges from ignorant to mild.

does the 65lb one come with wheels and an engine to move it around?
 
Did this dance looking for a deer rifle for my wife / daughter about a year ago and went with a 243 savage hunter youth and it has been great. My 70 lb 9 year old loves to shoot it off the bench. We shoot 100 gr bullets out of it and it triples as my nuance flat tail righ
