Ithaca XL 900 in 20ga
Hey guys new to site and not the best with buttons.
Trying to find a shotgun for my daughter.
Any info or input would be greatly appreciated.

Knowing the age of your daughter would help significantly.

But basically you want:

  • A short-stocked single shot in a smaller gauge like 20 ga. Something like an "NEF Pardner Youth". Don't go smaller than 20 ga because early success is critical for making it fun and keeping the interest going. (Single shot for overall weight and early range safety.)
  • If she's mid-teens or older, skip point #1 above and go with a typical 20 ga single shot with short-ish stock. Something like a Cooey will do fine so long as the stock is about 14" or less, depending on her stature.
  • MOST IMPORTANT POINT: Use the softest shooting loads you can find - ideally no more than 7/8 oz shot. Any shotgun shell will catch even the fastest clays, but only the softest shooting will do so with minimal recoil. Heavy recoil is the number one reason new shooters don't take to the sport. Inability to hit a target is number 2.
  • Take a couple of test shots with the gun before setting your daughter up to shoot, so she can see up close what to expect when the gun fires. Coach her to hold the gun properly in the shoulder without going to an extreme death grip. Let the first 2 shots she takes be test shots, not trying to hit anything, yet. Then, throw only straight-away shots for the first 10 shots. If she hits a good number of them, perhaps add some easy angles. Otherwise, stick with targets flying straight.
  • Be sure to go nuts with joy and praise EVERY time she hits one!
Hope that helps.

How old (tall) is she? Budget?

I'd be tempted to suggest something like this Linsley Bros SxS, 25" full/ IC, 6.3lbs. $600... chop to length, shoot some light 7/8 loads
