Lube / Sizing Bevel Base Bullets

I just cast a bunch of bevel base bullets with a new mould.

I lube / sized a few and realized that the lube around the bevel base makes a real mess. This is the first time I've worked with bevel bases.

Is there a trick to prevent the lube from getting in around the bevel or is there a quick way to clean it off?

Seems pretty tedious to have to wipe the base of each bullet by hand.

How do the commercial casters like DRG end up with clean bevel bases?

Any tips are appreciated, thanks.
 
which sizer are you using?
if using a star sizer simply make sure the lube holes are aligned correctly and plug the other holes that do not line up with the grease groove also do not over pressure the lube in the reservoir.

I'm using an RCBS Lubamatic.

I don't see how one can avoid having the bevelled area of the bullet pass through the area in the die that is pressurized by lube as the bullet travels down into the die.
 
For the RCBS you can put a disk of thin foam like from meat packaging under the bullet and size away, the little bit of compressed foam covers the bevel.
Folks that do alot of sizing use a Star sizer/luber where because of it's design, doesn't have any problem with the bevel. I have/use 6 sizers, but use the 2 Stars whenever I can because of some of the problems and slowness with the RCBS/Lyman units.
 
That disc of material the meat came from the store in, that Ben mentions, works well in place of a gas check, also.

Thanks Ben. I'll try that.

I was messing around today trying to make a seal to accomplish the same thing using hot glue but I wasn't having much luck.

I believe in the common adage, "KISS," so why worry about high tech?
Back in the 70s and 80s when I was doing quite a lot of big revolver shooting, I experimented and got all the information I could. I was using a flat base cast bullet in the 44 mag at full speed and one gun I had leaded bad.
A well known American writer of the day, stated that the material we are talking about worked about as well as a gas check. He had a name for the material, but said it was what came in meat packages from the butcher store and was considerable different than other styrofoam, in that it withstood the heat.
I got a punch that made the right sized disc and pushed it on with the sizer/lubricator. I thought it worked well.
