lubing gaz check bullet when you don't put them on and not applying lube to the shank

I make my gas checks out of pop can aluminum. Costs me a nickle a can cuz I can't get my money back for the used can. I get about 60 checks out of a can....IIRC. When gas is $1.33 a litre locally, and decent trucks go for north of $40K, I guess worrying about the cost of GC's gets lost in the rounding. Even at 7 cents a piece they still cost next to nothing. The gov't quit making pennies for a reason. How many rifle rounds do you shoot in a year? I go through around 10K of practice ammo per year in my handguns. I make my own GC's as a hobby for my rifle shooting and one of my 357 cast bullets. If I shoot 200 rounds of rifle a year and no more than 500 .357mag rounds I would spend about $14.00 a year on commercial GC's for my rifle and $35. on my .357mag rounds or what it costs me for 37 litres of gas. I am not a rich guy but I do know sometimes you spend more money trying to save money then what it is worth. Might be what Kjohn is saying.

ps I make my own GC's for a hobby not to save money.

I make gas checks too. But why even bother using them if there is no benefit? Even if they cost nothing to make, you waste the time making them as well as the time installing them. My hunting loads have them but my plinking rounds don’t.

My hobby is saving money ... but I’m not very good at it.

Well I install them on my rifle bullets because when I shoot my rifles I do it to see how tight a group I can manage using my cast bullets. I don't hunt anymore to I just use my rifles for another purpose. You probably would refer to it as "plinking". I don't spend a lot of time at it so I suppose it is "plinking". As for my revolvers in .38/.357 I have the 348156 bullet that takes a GC. I have a an excellent load using that bullet and another which seem to benefit from GC's. For the time and investment in dies to make the GC's I doubt there is an economic argument to make but I enjoy spending time at the bench making them and that really is all the excuse I need. Kinda like having a safe full of handguns. Only really need one or two or maybe five but I usually can justify owning them all if I think hard enough. What the hell you only go around once so you might as well enjoy what you are doing with the time you have here.
