Lubing beforehand works best yes. The .45 ACP was not intended as an outside-lubricated round, and will not work well as such.
Are you casting them yourself, buying them cast, but not lubed, or ready to go with some mystery "blue crayon" lube in the grooves.
I myself use Lyman Orange Magic for my smokeless stuff, and SPG for black powder rounds. They are applied via RCBS Lube-A-Matics. When I'm out of Orange Magic, I may try some of that Dragon Bullet stuff.
