I just bought a new Savage 10FP and the action is not as slick as it could be, so I have a few questions...

1. What parts of a bolt action should be lubricated?
2. What parts of the action should NOT be lubcricated?
3. What lubricant should be used (e.g. CLP, grease)?
4. Will the action eventually break-in and be easier to work?

Yes, I RTFM  The Savage manual that came with the rifle did not offer much advice on maintaining or lubricating the action.

Thanks in advance,

Scott

The only parts to get grease and I use that highly concentrated Moly grease you can get from Sinclair Int or others is behind the bolt lugs and where it cams up on the action in front of the bolt handle. Not sure about the Savage. Everything else get a thin coating of light oil [your choice] including the firing pin assembly, but the trigger assembly stays completely dry. No oil at all there.

cold weather hints

do you hunt in the xtreme cold? -5C or colder
how many shots per year/season?
personally i wash the gun in contact-cleaner/degreaser before hunting season and do exactly what canuck said, lube the bolt lugs contact area and the cam,(i use graphite grease) and the rest is dry, dry, dry.
never lube on the firing pin inside the bolt or anything. i let the gun sleep outside almost all season too. its the change in temp jumping in and out of the truck/ house cause the condensation to freeze. no lube on the firing pin trig assm for two or ten shots per season will not wear it out.
i usually hit the trig and pin with a lite oil in the summer when im blasting at the range
